Bengal pacer Akash Deep earned his maiden call-up to the Indian Test team as he got selected in the squad for the remaining three Tests against England beginning from February 15. Earlier, Deep also earned his maiden call-up to the Indian team as he got selected in the three-match ODI series against South Africa in December 2023.

In a heartwarming tale of grit and determination, the 27-year-old Akash, who hails from the quaint village of Sasaram, in Bihar, has defied the odds to make a mark in Indian cricket. A product of a middle-class family, Akash faced adversity early on, losing his father and elder brother. Yet, he emerged as a formidable force in domestic cricket, playing a pivotal role for Bengal since his debut in 2019.

The 27-year-old recently scalped 13 wickets for India A unofficial multiple-day series against England Lions. In the 29 First Class matches, the right-arm seamer has picked 103 wickets at an average of 23.18 with four-wicket hauls to his name. In the Indian Premier League (IPL), Akash plays for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

Sir, main toh train thaa, par train ko bhi patri pe laana hota hai, woh aapne kiya: Akash Deep

With 98 matches under his belt in all three formats, Akash Deep boasts an impressive record of over 170 wickets and 500 runs. In List A matches, he has showcased his prowess with 42 wickets at an average of 24.5, making a breakthrough every 30.4 balls while maintaining an economy of 4.82 runs per over.

In a recent conversation with his first state-level coach, Saurashish Lahiri, Akash expressed his gratitude, saying, "Sir, main toh train thaa, par train ko bhi patri pe laana hota hai, woh aapne kiya" (I was a train, but the train needed to be put on track, you did that). Lahiri, who has closely witnessed Akash's growth, shared the emotions as quoted by the Deccan Herald.

Apart from his stellar domestic record, Akash has also made a mark in the Indian Premier League (IPL), claiming six wickets. His call-up to the Indian dressing room is a testament to his consistent performances and undeniable talent. As Akash Deep joins the ranks of Bengal's cricketing gems, the nation eagerly awaits to see this rising star shine on the international stage.
