The inaugural season of the WPL is all set to begin on March 4 as Mumbai Indians take on Gujarat Giants in the season opener.
The inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 is scheduled to begin on March 4, and the tournament has cricket fans all around the world buzzing with excitement. The tournament will begin with Mumbai Indians taking on Gujarat Giants at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday.
Five teams will be competing for the WPL glory as the tournament will be played at the DY Patil Stadium and Brabourne. Royal Challengers Bangalore, Gujarat Giants, Mumbai Indians, UP Warriorz, and Delhi Capitals have many big names from women’s cricket, and stars like Harmanpreet Kaur, Meg Lanning, and Smriti Mandhana will be going head to head for the coveted title.
For the first season, the WPL will conduct a total of 20 matches and two playoff matches. The entirety of the 22 games will be played within one month, as the final is scheduled for March 26. The five-team competition will have each team playing eight games in the league stage - two games each against every opponent. Following the league stage, the team finishing on top of the points table will qualify directly for the final, while the teams finishing second and third will lock horns in the Eliminator to decide the second finalist.
Harmanpreet Kaur will be leading Mumbai Indians, Smriti Mandhana was announced as the skipper of RCB, Meg Lanning will lead Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants will look towards Beth Mooney to lead them to glory, and Alyssa Healy is the skipper of UP Warriorz.
