On Thursday, November 7, the Women's Premier League (WPL) teams are likely to announce their retained players list ahead of the third season of the tournament next year. Akin to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 player retentions, each team will be allowed to retain a set of players, with the option of using a Right-To-Match (RTM) card in the auction.

The maximum squad size in the WPL is 18, including a maximum of six overseas players. The date for the WPL 2025 auction is yet to be announced, but the impending season will take place during the February-March window next year. All five teams will have a purse of INR 15 crore to spend, including their retentions, unlike the INR 13.50 crore in the second season. In the first edition, the purse was INR 12 crore.

A lot of the attention will be on RCB and the players they will retain after going the distance in WPL 2024. Interestingly, the initial deadline for announcing the retentions was October 15. However, it was postponed to November 7 as teams got a few more weeks to make their plans.

Apart from the Royal Challengers, Delhi Capitals Women, Mumbai Indians Women, Gujarat Giants, and UP Warriorz will also be participating in the tournament like in the previous two seasons. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is waiting for the league to gain more popularity before adding new teams.

The significance of the retentions is huge as the teams who performed well last year like Delhi and Bengaluru are expected to retain their cores. Meanwhile, the teams in the bottom half of the points table like UP Warriorz and Gujarat Giants might want to revamp their squad and start afresh.
