Sunrisers Hyderabad surprised a lot of people by deciding to retain Abhishek Sharma ahead of the mega auction in 2022. However, the youngster repaid their faith with quality performances in the last couple of seasons of the Indian Premier League. Recently, he played a massive role in Punjab’s maiden triumph in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy as Sharma made 485 runs in ten matches at a staggering strike rate of 192.46. Despite so, the road to the national team seems a bit too long for the cricketer.
The opener made his first-class debut alongside Shubman Gill but the latter went on to become a three-format player for India while Abhishek is yet to make it to the scheme of things. The upcoming edition of the IPL will hold massive value as if he manages to score a lot of runs, the Amritsar-born cricketer might get into the national set-up replacing any of the senior cricketers after the T20 World Cup.
Meanwhile, speaking about his batting technique, Sharma mentioned that he likes to punish the bad balls, no matter which format he’s playing. The 23-year-old added that his idol Yuvraj Singh made slight technical adjustments to his batting and added that he always wanted to be like the legendary cricketer.
“The basics are the same. In T20s you try to score off every ball in the other formats, you have that extra time. But I have a simple philosophy. No matter what the format is, if a ball is there to be hit, I go at it with no half-measures. Whatever technical adjustments I needed it was done by Yuvi paaji,” Sharma told Hindustan Times.
“He was my idol when I started playing cricket. I always wanted to be like him. I first met him in the Punjab team. Maybe he saw something in me. He always guides me. He really backs me. Whenever I get out for a low score, he always talks to me. He is always very confident about my next match. I get a lot of boost after talking to me. Even off the field, no one can get a better guide than Yuvraj Singh,” he added.
