IPL 2025: Yuvraj Singh kept Abhishek Sharma away from late parties, reveals Yograj Singh
Yuvraj Singh is the mentor of Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill.
The former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh's father, Yograj Singh, spoke about the youngster Abhishek Sharma and how he was disciplined at the start of his career. Now, we see Abhishek in a completely different role. He opens for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the ongoing IPL 2025 (Indian Premier League) and starts hitting the bowlers from the very first over.
However, before this aggressive batter came to the limelight, he was trained by Yuvraj Singh, who was his mentor. The southpaw hit sixes like his mentor, which is one of the most remarkable things in his career. During a recent interview, Yograj Singh spoke about how Yuvraj played an important role in disciplining Abhishek.
The youngster had a very different and reckless lifestyle, but Yuvi made a conscious effort to keep the player in check. Yuvraj Singh used to talk to Abhishek's father and instruct him to wake his son at 5 AM. There were times when the former player used to urge the young batting sensation to sleep early, by 9 PM.
"Late-night parties, girlfriend. What happened then? Yuvraj said, 'Lock him.' He came under Yuvraj Singh's wings as his father couldn’t handle him. Yuvi shouted, 'Where are you?' I heard him shout, 'It's 9 PM, go to bed. Do you understand me? I am coming.' He then handed over the phone and went to bed. Yuvi then told his father to wake him up at 5 AM," said Yograj Singh on CricketNext.
Yuvraj Singh's impact on young stars like Shubman Gill
Moreover, it’s not just Abhishek Sharma whose life was transformed by Yuvraj; there was Shubman Gill, whose career was nurtured by the former player. He was Gill's mentor before he came into international cricket. The former player has made a significant contribution to the lives of these youngsters, who are now representing India.
What if Yograj joins Rayudu on IPL 2025 commentary panel?
Notably, both of them are included in the BCCI Central contract for their outstanding performance in international cricket. The players leave no chance of praising Yuvraj and his contribution to their lives whenever they get a chance.
"This is exactly what happened with Shubman Gill. But then, what happened? When the diamond lands in the hands of another diamond, what becomes of it? It turns into Kohinoor, and that's what happened with Abhishek Sharma. If this diamond had gone into the wrong hands of a spade, it would have broken and scattered. Many players in India broke and scattered," Yograj concluded.
