Australia put the disappointment from the Zimbabwe series behind them after securing a narrow victory in the low-scoring thriller against nemesis New Zealand in the first ODI at Cairns. The hosts saw a miraculous recovery from Alex Carey (85) and Cameron Green (89*), who stitched a sixth-wicket stand of 158 runs to draw first blood for the Aussies in the prestigious Chappell–Hadlee series.

New Zealand posted a below-par tally on the board after batting first in the match, but their seam bowlers, especially Trent Boult, made the total look insurmountable, reducing the hosts to 44/5. But it wasn't to be for the visitors, who are yet to get over the line in an ODI on Australian soil since 2009.

Pitch and conditions

The Cazaly's Stadium in Cairns had been devoid of international cricket for years, before making a sizzling return in the first ODI as the pitch had enough for all participants in the game. The new ball is likely to trouble the batters once again, and the team winning the toss will like to chase on the pitch, which gets better for batting in the second innings.

Playing Combinations AUS vs NZ

Australia

Although Australia triumphed over their fierce rivals in the series opener, the poor form of the top order remains a concern. Aaron Finch didn't have the best of time in the Zimbabwe series, and his dry spell with the bat was extended in the first ODI. He needs to perform and perform quickly, or his place in the squad won't be guaranteed with the mega ICC event on the horizon.

Predicted XI: Aaron Finch (c), David Warner, Steven Smith, Alex Carey (wk), Marnus Labuschagne, Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Cameron Green, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood

New Zealand

Trent Boult and Matt Henry were exceptional with the ball, but unfortunately, they did not receive enough support from the other bowlers as the Kiwis look vulnerable with the older ball. Michael Bracewell and Mitchell Santner were pedestal best in comparison to Glenn Maxwell and Adam Zampa, who shared five wickets between them.

Predicted XI: Martin Guptill, Devon Conway, Kane Williamson (c), Tom Latham (wk), Daryl Mitchell, Michael Bracewell, James Neesham, Mitchell Santner, Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, Trent Boult
