India will square off against visitors South Africa in the first ODI of the three-match series in Lucknow.
With the T20 World Cup 2022 almost upon us, teams are indulged in fine tuning their skills by playing as many T20Is as possible either at home or away. But amid this T20I extravaganza, quite eccentrically, India and South Africa find themselves in a three-match ODI series that does not have much significance. The ODI series is not even a part of the ongoing ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League fixtures.
None of the players, who have been named in India's T20I World Cup squad are a part of the series but the same is not the case with South Africa. The Proteas have all their star players ready for the series and that gives them a major upper hand over an India side that comprises plenty of youngsters.
The South African team management would love to see their skipper Temba Bavuma get among the runs. With scores of 0, 0, and three Bavuma had a nightmarish experience during the recently culminated T20I series against India. He is clearly struggling to get going and, therefore, needs truckloads of runs under his belt to add to his confidence as a diffident leader can never lead a team to glory.
In addition to Bavuma, the other South African players would love to capitalize and build on their form (either wicket-taking or run-scoring).
On the other hand, India have included numerous rookies in the squad for the series and it is a result of them sweating it out in the domestic circuit and producing performances that matter. There are a lot of names in India's ODI squad that were in the reckoning for the T20 World Cup 2022 squad selection but missed out by a whisker. Hence, this series is an opportunity for them to make a statement and that too bold enough for selectors to observe.
Pitch Conditions
The wicket at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow will aid batters as like most others wickets in the Indian sub continent. And with the due in the evening, the captain winning the toss would prefer to bowl first.
Playing Combinations for IND vs SA
India
The Shikhar Dhawan-led side looks fairly inexperienced but has players who are brimming with confidence. The ODI World Cup is slated to happen next year in India and a spectacular performance in this series will certainly put the players in the scheme of things for the same. Shikhar has not led India on a lot of occasions and, therefore, this ODI series is also a valuable opportunity for him to showcase his calibre as a leader.
Predicted Playing XI: Shikhar Dhawan (c), Shubhman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Rajat Patidar, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson (wk), Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar, Ravi Bishnoi, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj
South Africa
Temba Bavuma will have a valuable opportunity to lead by example and marshall his troops well on the field just as he did against India in the third T20I. Most of the South Africa players who are a part of the T20 World Cup squad will treat the series as a dress rehearsal for the mega carnival slated to happen in Australia shortly.
Predicted Playing XI: Quinton de Kock (wk), Janneman Malan, Reeza Hendricks, Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma (c), David Miller, Dwaine Pretorius, Wayne Parnell, Kagiso Rabada, Keshav Maharaj, Tabraiz Shamsi
