ODI World Cup 2023, Match 11: New Zealand vs Bangladesh Match Preview

New Zealand and Bangladesh face each other at Chepauk in the 11th game of the ongoing ODI World Cup on Friday, October 13. These two teams had faced each other in a three-match T20I series in Bangladesh just prior to the marquee event. Both teams rested some of their main players for the series that was won by the Kiwis by a 2-0 margin. While Lockie Ferguson led New Zealand, Bangladesh had Litton Das captaining for the first two matches and Najmul Hossain Shanto taking up the mantle for the third.

Will Young scored 128 runs in the three matches at an average of 42.67. He looked composed at the crease and played well against the Bangladeshi spinners, notching up two half-centuries. On the bowling front, Ish Sodhi was the highest wicket-taker in the series with six scalps. All of them came in the second ODI, where he finished with career-best figures of 6/39 in 10 overs.

It wasn't a memorable series for the Bangladeshi contingent but they will rely heavily on Shanto, who has been their leading run-getter in ODIs this year. The southpaw also scored 76 in the third ODI against New Zealand.

So far, New Zealand have had a great time in India. After winning a couple of warm-up matches against Pakistan and South Africa, the Black Caps overpowered defending champions England in their first match of the ODI World Cup 2023, emerging victorious by nine wickets with 13.4 overs left. They followed it up with a comprehensive 99-run victory against the Netherlands to stay unbeaten in the 10-team competition.

Young Rachin Ravindra scored a blistering ton against England and followed it up with a fifty against the Netherlands. While the second-wicket partnership between Devon Conway and Ravindra won the match for the Kiwis against England. Matt Henry has been exceptional, picking up three wickets in each of the two games. Meanwhile, Mitchell Santner picked up a five-for against the Netherlands.

Bangladesh, on the other hand, defeated Afghanistan with consummate ease in Dharamsala to begin their campaign. After dismissing Hashmatullah Shahidi's men for 156, the 'Bangla Tigers' won by six wickets with 15.2 overs to spare. Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz bamboozled the Afghan batters, finishing with three wickets apiece. In the second innings, the latter scored a solid half-century and so did Shanto.

In Bangladesh's second game, they were totally outplayed by England. Jos Buttler and Co. amassed 364 before bowling Bangladesh out for 227. Litton and Mushfiqur Rahim scored half-centuries but it only delayed the inevitable.

NZ vs BAN Pitch and Conditions

The Chepauk track is known for being low and slow with spinners getting a lot of assistance. The India versus Australia clash was hosted at this venue and the Indian spinners ruled the roost in the first innings while the Aussie pacers made the new ball talk under the lights. Bangladesh will not mind a pitch that offers turn because they have a lot of spin-bowling options in their arsenal. New Zealand will bank on Sodhi and Santner while Tom Latham and Devon Conway, who are very good players of spin, will be crucial with the bat.

Mark Chapman should make way to accommodate a fit-again Kane Williamson, who will lead the side. Ish Sodhi should walk into the playing XI in place of Lockie Ferguson as he will get help from the deck and can play a critical role in the middle overs.

The Asian side interestingly dropped one of their most experienced players, Mahmudullah, against England to bring in Mahedi Hasan. The veteran may come back into the side in place of Shoriful Islam to beef up the spin-bowling department. Tanzid Hasan has failed to impress in the seven ODIs he has played, averaging just 6.67. If Bangladesh open with Mehidy, they can bring in Nasum Ahmed to strengthen their spin attack further.
