AUS vs IND 2024-25, 3rd Test, Day 2 Stats Review: Bumrah India's silver lining on Australia's day out
Australia continued to put India under tremendous pressure with centuries from Travis Head and Steve Smith amid Bumrah's fifer.
With the first day being interrupted heavily by rain, the extended day's play on the second day of the third Australia vs India Test being played at the Gabba in Brisbane was full of action.
Australia's openers Usman Khawaja and Nathan McSweeney continued from their overnight stay but were sent packing in quick succession by Jasprit Bumrah (5/72). Australia were soon 75 for 3, and it looked like India were ahead at Lunch, but that was the only real respite they would have for the next few hours.
Steve Smith (101 off 190) and Travis Head (152 off 160) did what they do best. While Smith was measured, Head was blazing away at the bowlers. The pair put up an imposing 241 runs in almost 50 overs. Bumrah then provided another burst of wickets, removing both the centurions and Mitchell Marsh in the space of four overs.
Alex Carey (45* off 47) then arrested the collapse to push Australia past 400 by the end of the day.
Here are some stats highlights from the day:
1 - Travis Head's century gave him a unique double. Earlier in the year, against West Indies, Travis Head had gotten a King's Pair at the Gabba in Brisbane, the same ground where he got a century today. He is the only player to get a King's Pair and a century at the same stadium in the same year in Tests.
1 - Since the start of 2023, Travis Head registered his fourth century against India in international cricket. Nobody has more against a single opponent in this time period, but Fakhar Zaman has as many against New Zealand.
2 - With his 33rd Test century, Steve Smith moved past Steve Waugh to have the second most Test centuries for Australia behind Ricky Ponting, who has 41.
1 - Steve Smith registered his ninth century in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, pulling level at the top with both Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar, who have nine each as well.
1 - With his tenth Test century against India, Steve Smith pulled level with Joe Root as the player with the joint-most Test hundreds against India.
4 - Steve Smith made his 33rd Test century in his 199th innings, becoming the joint fourth-fastest alongside Kumar Sangakkara to that milestone by the number of innings taken.
1 - Jasprit Bumrah took his eighth Test five-wicket haul in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) countries and became the Indian player with the most Test fifers in SENA going past Kapil Dev's seven.
3 - Jasprit Bumrah's eighth SENA fifer put him at joint-third alongside Imran Khan on the list of most fifers by an Asian player in Tests in SENA. Only Muttiah Muralitharan (10) and Wasim Akram (11) have more.
