Cheteshwar Pujara has struck the fifties in all five Test innings he has played against Bangladesh

Cheteshwar Pujara smashed 90 while Shreyas Iyer remained unbeaten on 82 as India ended Day one of the first Test on 278/6 against Bangladesh in Chattogram. The duo added 149 runs for the fifth wicket as the visitors managed to pass the 275-run mark on the opening day of the match. Rishabh Pant played a quickfire innings of 46 off 45, which included six fours and two maximums as he reached his personal milestone of 50 sixes in the longest format of the game.

Talking about how the day panned out, skipper KL Rahul won the toss and opted to bat first. He got dismissed for 22 while his opening partner Shubman Gill amassed 20. Virat Kohli’s lean run in the whites continued as he managed just a solitary run. Pujara and Iyer joined hands to stitch a huge partnership before the former missed out on a well-deserved century by just ten runs.

He has now gone 51 innings without a three-figure mark in Test cricket with his last ton coming against Australia back in January 2019. Iyer looked solid in his approach as he remained not out at the end of day’s play after facing 169 deliveries. Spin bowlers Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan Miraz picked up three and two wickets respectively for the home side.

Meanwhile, here are some of the important stats and numbers from Day 1 of the first Test between Bangladesh and India:

1 – Shreyas Iyer became the first Indian to reach double figures in each of his first Ten innings in Tests.

50 – Rishabh Pant reached the milestone of 50 sixes in Test cricket. He became the second Indian wicketkeeper after MS Dhoni (78) to achieve the feat.

54 – Pant became the second Indian and third fastest overall to reach 50 Test maximums in 54 innings. Shahid Afridi and Rohit Sharma hit it in 46 and 51 innings respectively.

5 – Cheteshwar Pujara has played five Test innings against Bangladesh and has scored fifty in each of them. His scores read as 90, 55, 54, 54*, and 83.

149 – Pujara and Shreyas Iyer registered the highest fifth-wicket partnership of 149 for India against Bangladesh in Tests. They surpassed Mayank Agarwal's and Ravindra Jadeja’s stand of 123 in Indore in 2019.

14 – Iyer has smashed the most 50-plus scores (14) for India across formats in 2022. He went past Virat Kohli’s tally of 13 such scores.

4021 – Pant completed the landmark of 4000 runs in international cricket in 136 innings.

67.60 – Pujara and Pant have shared 676 runs in ten innings at a solid average of 67.60 with two century and five half-century partnerships.

68 – Kohli has managed to amass just 68 runs in his last five Test innings at an average of 13.60 and the best score of 23.

51 – Pujara has now gone 51 innings (including not-outs) without a century in Test matches. His last hundred came against Australia in Sydney in January 2019.

5 – Pujara is now joint-top with Sachin Tendulkar for hitting the most 50-plus scores (five) for India against the Bangla Tigers.
