England vs New Zealand, 2nd ODI Stats Review: Liam Livingstone’s highest score, Trent Boult’s 100th ODI, and other stats
Daryl Mitchell has now struck three centuries and a half-century in his last six ODI innings.
Liam Livingstone achieved his highest score of 95* while Sam Curran racked up 42 off 35 lower down the order as England beat New Zealand comfortably by a margin of 79 runs in the 34-overs per side contest at The Rose Bowl in Southampton. Daryl Mitchell continued his red-hot form as he smashed 57 but failed to take his side over the line as the series is now leveled 1-1 with two games to go.
Talking about how the game unfolded, skipper Tom Latham won the toss, and the Kiwis elected to field first in overcast conditions. Seamer Trent Boult, who appeared in his 100th one-day international match, rocked the England top order early with three quick wickets. Bairstow and Joe Root got dismissed for six and zero, respectively, while Ben Stokes amassed only one, with all falling prey to Boult. Matt Henry dismissed Harry Brook for two as England got in trouble at 28/4.
Captain Jos Buttler mustered 30 while Moeen Ali contributed with his 33-run knock, but it was all about Livingstone and Curran then. The duo added 112 runs for the seventh wicket to take their side to a challenging total of 226/7 in 34 overs. Livingstone smashed nine fours and a six in 78 deliveries on his way to his highest score in the format.
In reply, Finn Allen got out for a duck, while the centurion from the last game Devon Conway made only 14. Will Young looked good for his 33 off 39 until he ran himself out. Latham and Glenn Phillips failed to contribute as they scored 19 and two runs, respectively. Pacers David Willey and Reece Topley snared three scalps each to bundle out the BlackCaps for 147 in 26.5 overs. For his magnificent knock, Livingstone grabbed the Player of the Match award.
