A solid half-century from Shubman Gill along with ruthless power-hitting from the finishers, followed by a clinical bowling display saw Gujarat Titans register their first win over Mumbai Indians by a margin of 55 runs in match number 35 of Indian Premier League 2023 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
The coin spun in the visitor’s favour, as Rohit & Co. opted to field first. Arjun Tendulkar drew the first blood as Wriddhiman Saha departed in the third over for four runs. Skipper Hardik Pandya then joined Shubman Gill in the middle as the duo kept the scoreboard ticking by adding 38 runs for the second wicket. Piyush Chawla struck in his very first ball immediately after the powerplay, as Pandya departed for 13 runs.
Vijay Shankar then partnered with Shubman Gill to add 41 runs for the third wicket in the process of which, Gill rose to his third fifty of IPL 2023. Kumar Kartikeya broke the healthy stand by dismissing Gill, following which Vijay Shankar departed in the very next over for 19 runs. The quick fall of wickets left GT reeling at 101/4 in the 13th over.
Abhinav Manohar then joined hands with David Miller as the duo went bonkers against the MI bowlers, smashing them round the ground. The pair added 71 runs in the course of 35 balls. Abhinav Manohar scored a 21-ball 42 that included six boundaries while Miller scored 46 in 22 balls, aided by two fours and four maximums. Rahul Tewatia finished off the proceedings with a five-ball 20-run cameo to help GT post a humungous total of 207/6 in 20 overs.
Chasing 208, MI lost Rohit cheaply, as he succumbed to the dominance of Hardik Pandya. Ishan Kishan and Cameron Green added a steady 39 run-stand for the second wicket before Rashid Khan not only broke the partnership but also struck twice in the same over to send Ishan Kishan and in-form Tilak Varma packing.
Thereon, Mumbai Indians were never in the chase as GT bowlers picked up wickets at regular intervals. Noor Ahmad rattled the middle order by picking the three big wickets of Cameron Green, Tim David and Suryakumar Yadav. Nehal Wadhera piled up runs at the end, but it was just to reduce the margin of defeat as GT finally had the better of MI by 55 runs.
