Rohit Sharma started his Indian Premier League (IPL) journey with Deccan Chargers and contributed significantly for them over three seasons. The then young talented batter got a platform to establish himself and later emerged as one of the most valuable players in league history during his stint with Mumbai Indians (MI). Or is it better to say MI burst onto the scene under him?
MI were struggling to get going in the 2013 season and halfway through the tournament, Rohit was given the responsibility to lead the team. It turned out to be one of Rohit's best IPL seasons so far. The right-hander amassed 538 runs - his most in a season - and importantly, led the side to their maiden title.
Since then, Rohit Sharma the batter, who has scored over 6000 runs, has been overshadowed by Rohit Sharma the captain, who won four more tournaments in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. However, the 36-year-old is no longer in MI’s leadership group and will play as a pure batter in the 2024 edition. Hence, we might see some exploits from his bat this time around, and also some major milestones await the Hitman in the upcoming matches.
Let's take a look at three milestones that Rohit Sharma can achieve in the upcoming matches
3. 100 catches in IPL
Rohit Sharma is a safe pair of hands in the field. Known for his mastery of taking catches in the slip cordon, he usually fields inside the 30-yard circle. He is now on the verge of creating a record with his fielding efforts in the upcoming IPL 2024 matches. Rohit needs just two more catches to complete 100 catches in the league.
Currently, he has taken 98 catches in 243 matches while playing for Deccan Chargers and MI. With 109 catches, former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) star Suresh Raina is at the top spot, followed by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) icon, Virat Kohli, in the second place.
Meanwhile, former MI all-rounder Kieron Pollard leads the list of most catches for MI with 103 catches. Rohit is second in this category with 76 catches, followed by new skipper Hardik Pandya with 56 catches. Notably, earlier this month, the Indian team captain became the first-ever outfield cricketer to take 60 or more matches in all three formats of the game.
