In a very back-and-forth encounter, RCB went to a 6th consecutive win and entered miraculously into the playoffs. Rain threats always seemed to loom over Match No. 68 RCB vs CSK at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium and it did rain briefly. But that did not dampen RCB's charge in this season.

Put into bat first, RCB started aggressively in the first few overs, but on a pitch that seemed to turn more than reasonably acceptable, CSK's spinners pulled it back in the powerplay. But both Virat Kohli(47 off 29) and Faf du Plessis(54 off 39) took the spinners on after the powerplay. Rajat Patidar(41 off 23) continued the way he has been, and then Cameron Green(38* off 17) with support from Dinesh Karthik and Glenn Maxwell put RCB up to 219 in a game they needed to win by 18 runs or more to qualify for the playoffs. Both Maheesh Theekshana(0 for 25) and Mitchell Santner(1 for 23) restricted RCB.

Glenn Maxwell(1 for 25) removed Ruturaj Gaikwad on the first ball of CSK's innings, but Rachin Ravindra(61 off 37) and Ajinkya Rahane(33 off 22) tried to rebuild it after Daryl Mitchell fell cheaply too. But after Rahane's dismissal, it became difficult for CSK as Shivam Dube struggled and that ultimately resulted in a mix-up that got Rachin Ravindra dismissed.

With the match looking out of CSK's reach, Ravindra Jadeja(42* off 22) and MS Dhoni(25 off 13) seemed to turn back the clock. While Swapnil Singh(0 for 13) kept it tight in the middle, CSK went from a situation where they needed 56 runs off the last three overs to qualify, to 17 runs off the last over to qualify. Yash Dayal(2 for 42) was sent for a six by Dhoni's first ball but staged a comeback that alongside getting Dhoni out, defended 11 from the last 5 balls to ensure qualification for RCB.

Let's look at some significant records from this match:

1  - Virat Kohli completed the milestone of 3000 runs at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in the IPL. This is the most by any batter at any ground in the tournament. The only other player with even 2000 runs at one ground in the IPL is Rohit Sharma who currently has 2295 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

1 - Virat Kohli completed the milestone of scoring 9000 T20 runs in India. Which is the most by a batter in a single country. Rohit Sharma with 8008 in India is a distant second.

1 - Kohli's sixes tally at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in the IPL is now 128, the most by a batter at a single stadium in the league. In this innings, he went past Chris Gayle's 127 at this very stadium. AB de Villiers with 118 at Bengaluru is the only other person with 100 sixes at a single ground in the IPL.

2 - Virat Kohli scored 700 runs in an IPL season for the second time in his career. After Chris Gayle, he is now only the second batsman to score 700 runs in more than one IPL season.

2 - Virat Kohli became the second player to hit 700 fours in an IPL career. Shikhar Dhawan with 768 fours is a long way out in front.

2 - Virat Kohli took his sixes tally for the season to 37 sixes. Among Indian players, this is now the joint second most in a season alongside Rishabh Pant in 2018. Kohli's 38 sixes in 2018 are still on the top.

1 - RCB took their season tally of sixes to 157 so far this year. It is now the only instance of a team hitting 150 sixes in a single T20 tournament. Although, SRH with 146 sixes this season are close.

7 - Ruturaj Gaikwad's dismissal was the seventh instance of a captain being dismissed on the first ball of an IPL innings. The full list of players who did so is:

Brendon McCullum vs RCB, Durban, 2009
