MI vs GT, Match 57 IPL 2023 Stats Review: Suryakumar Yadav's maiden IPL century, Rashid Khan's all-round feat and other stats
MI became the first team to defeat GT twice in IPL
A scintillating century from Suryakumar Yadav followed by a good bowling display from bowlers helped Mumbai Indians edge over Gujarat Titans by 27 runs, despite Rashid Khan’s one-man show in match number 57 of Indian Premier League 2023 at Wankhede Stadium.
The visitors won the toss as Hardik & Co. opted to field first. MI openers got off to a flier as the duo of Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan toyed with potent GT bowlers in the powerplay, with the scorecard reading 61/0 in 6 overs. Rashid Khan struck twice just after the powerplay as both the set batters, Rohit and Ishan, departed for 29 and 31 respectively.
Nehal Wadhera soon departed after a short 7-ball-15 runs cameo, courtesy of yet another splendid delivery from Rashid Khan. Thereon, MI's innings was all about Suryakumar Yadav, who went bonkers against the GT bowlers, smacking them all around the ground to bring up what was a magnificent maiden IPL century for the 32-year-old batter from Mumbai.
Suryakumar Yadav remained unbeaten on 103 runs scored off 49 balls, which included 17 boundaries. He was ably supported by Vishnu Vinod, who too contributed with 30 runs amassed over 20 deliveries, to help MI post a massive total of 218/5 in 20 overs. For GT, Rashid Khan was the pick of bowlers for his spell of 4/30 in 4 overs.
Chasing a huge 219, the GT top order did not live up to the expectations, as MI bowlers ran through the batting unit right from the powerplay. Soon after, GT were left groggy at 26/3 in the fourth over. Vijay Shankar showed intent with a few glorious-looking shots, but Piyush Chawla ended his little cameo with a beauty in his very first ball. Soon, Kumar Kartikeya cleaned up Abhinav Manohar in his first ball and GT were left in deep trouble at 55/5 in the 8th over.
David Miller and Rahul Tewatia kept the chase going by adding 45 runs for the sixth wicket, but Akash Madhwal stopped the good-going partnership by trapping Miller in front to pick up his third wicket. Rashid Khan’s sensational power hitting at the end helped GT reduce the margin of defeat as MI eventually emerged victorious by a margin of 27 runs. Akash Madhwal was the pick of the bowlers for MI, with a spell of 3/31 in 4 overs.
