Most 5-wicket hauls in men's ODIs: Mohammed Shami surpasses Richard Hadlee & Shaun Pollock
Top bowlers with the most five-wicket hauls in One Day International cricket.
Star Indian pacer Mohammed Shami added another feather to his illustrious cap by claiming his sixth five-wicket haul in ODIs during India’s opening match of the Champions Trophy 2025 against Bangladesh in Dubai. This achievement saw him surpass greats like Sir Richard Hadlee and Shaun Pollock in the all-time list for most five-wicket hauls in men's ODIs. His performance played an important role in restricting Bangladesh to a total of 228.
Having been asked to bowl first, the Men in Blue looked to its experienced pacers for an early breakthrough, and Shami delivered in the very first over of the game. He also became the fastest Indian bowler to reach 200 ODI wickets, breaking Ajit Agarkar’s record. The 34-year-old first dismissed Soumya Sarkar for a duck and followed it up with the wicket of Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who edged a wide delivery to slip. He later returned to dismiss Jaker Ali with an off-cutter.
In doing so, he claimed his 200th ODI wicket, achieving the milestone in just 103 innings, making him the second-fastest in the format's history, only behind Australia’s Mitchell Starc (102 innings). Interestingly, he surpassed Starc’s record for the fewest balls required to reach the 200-wicket feat, taking just 5,126 balls compared to Starc’s 5,240 deliveries.
Mohammed Shami went on to clean up Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Taskin Ahmed to complete his five-wicket haul, finishing with figures of 5/53. His performance ensured that India restricted Bangladesh to a chaseable total.
Shami’s latest five-wicket haul promotes his place among the elite bowlers in the ODI history. With six five-fors, he is now tied with legends like Wasim Akram and Trent Boult, just one behind Glenn McGrath. Waqar Younis continues to lead the list with 13 such performances.
