Royal Challengers Bangalore, as a franchise, has been traditionally known for ordinary bowling performances. The same is confirmed by stats as well, as RCB bowlers have conceded the most runs in the last five overs of the league. Chennai Super Kings, on the other hand, have been one of the most brutal forces to reckon with when it comes to going wild at Bengaluru's small-sized M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Chennai Super Kings have effected some of the highest scores at the ground and it wasn't any different in the 24th match of the ongoing Indian Premier League 2023 when the MS Dhoni-led side once again set foot in Bengaluru to lock horns with RCB. Batting first, CSK rode on Devon Conway and Shivam Dube's extraordinary power-hitting to notch up a mammoth total of 226/6. Conway scored yet another half-century to register 83 runs off 45 balls, aided by six sixes and as many fours. Dube, on the other hand, hit two fours and five sixes to score 52 off just 27 deliveries.
While all the RCB bowlers barring Mohammad Siraj had a forgettable outing each, it was RCB's latest recruit Vyshak Vijay Kumar who was hammered for as many as 62 runs in 4 overs. The Karnataka bowler's solitary wicket came in the form of Ambati Rayudu as he ended up leaking runs at a monumental economy of 15.50.
This disastrous outing made Vyshak the third most expensive bowler for RCB in a single IPL innings. His 62 off four overs is the second most runs ever conceded by an RCB bowler in the history of the tournament. He stands second only to RCB's Australian import Josh Hazlewood who had conceded 64 runs in his wicketless outing against Punjab Kings in 2022.
Moreover, Shane Watson gave away 61 runs against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final of 2016 whereas Tim Southee features fourth in the list with his run against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2019 where he registered atrocious figures of 0/61.
PLAYER | FIGURES | OPPONENT |
Josh Hazlewood | 0/64 | vs Punjab Kings in 2022 |
Vyshak Vijay Kumar | 1/62 | vs Chennai Super Kings in 2023 |
Shane Watson | 0/61 | vs Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016 |
Tim Southee | 0/61 | vs Kolkata Knight Riders in 2019 |
Notably, Vyshak was brought in by RCB as a replacement for their star batter from Madhya Pradesh, Rajat Patidar, who was earlier ruled out from the tournament after the 29-year-old had sustained an injury ahead of the commencement of the tournament.
