Stats: Virat Kohli becomes fastest cricketer to amass 27,000 international runs

Kohli scored 47 runs on Day 4 against Bangladesh to achieve the feat.

Ace India batter Virat Kohli has a habit of breaking records, and he did it once more after Day 4 of the ongoing second Test between India and Bangladesh. In a rain-marred clash in Kanpur, India and Bangladesh finally gathered to continue play on the penultimate day of the clash. 

After India managed to limit the visitors to a score of 233 runs in the first innings, the side came out to bat with an attacking mindset, playing aggressively against Bangladesh’s bowling attack right from the get-go. 

After Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma’s good starts, it was Virat Kohli’s turn to take on Bangladesh’s bowlers. The star batter went on to play a knock of 47 runs in 35 deliveries, and in doing so, Kohli became the fastest cricketer to reach the 27,000-run mark in international cricket. 

Kohli achieved the feat in just 594 innings, whereas the previous record was held by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who achieved the feat in 623 innings. Kohli has accumulated an impressive 13,906 runs in 295 ODIs, along with 8918 runs in Test cricket. In T20Is, he amassed 4,188 runs before he announced his retirement from the shortest format.

Bangladesh trail by 26 runs ahead of Day 5

Speaking of the game between India and Bangladesh, coming in to bat after conceding 233 runs, India opened their innings with Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma scoring 72 and 23 runs, respectively. Shubman Gill added 39 runs on the board, with Kohli and KL Rahul amassing 47 and 68 runs, respectively, as India posted a total of 285 runs in response and declared their innings. 

As for Bangladesh, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Shakib Al Hasan were the highest wicket-takers in the first innings, with four wickets each to their names. Hasan Mahmud took one wicket as well. 

Coming out with a trail, Bangladesh lost two wickets quite early. Zakir Hasan and Hasan Mahmud were dismissed on scores of 10 and 4, respectively. Day 4 of the second Test ended with Bangladesh on a score of 26 runs, having lost two wickets and trailing by 26 runs. The side will hope to play for a draw, whereas India will be looking to take wickets and get a result out of the game.
