T20 World Cup 2024 Stats Review: Afghanistan's maiden win against Australia, most ha-tricks in T20 World Cups and other stats
Afghanistan put Australia's World Cup campaign in trouble with an unprecedented win
Afghanistan bolstered their chances of making it to the semifinals of the 2024 T20 World Cup after a resounding win over Australia at Kingstown. The match against India is now a virtual quarterfinal for Australia while Afghanistan have a lease of life against a beleagured Bangladesh.
Australia put Afghanistan in and ran a very tight ship with Ashton Agar(0 for 17) being the main controller of run flow. Rahmanullah Gurbaz(60 off 49) and Ibrahim Zadran(51 off 49) hung around to stitch their third century stand of the tournament despite being very slow about it. Adam Zampa(2 for 28) then struck twice to induce a collapse that saw Afghanistan lose 3 wickets for 4 runs in 12 balls. Before Afghanistan could make a final push towards the death, Pat Cummins(3 for 28) silenced them with his second hattrick of the tournament and Afghanistan finished at what looked like a below par total.
Australia had trouble with the chase, the chase started very slowly, and Naveen ul Haq(3 for 20) produced an early collapse that saw Australia lose three wickets in the powerplay, but the main hero of the defense was Gulbadin Naib(4 for 20). Naib oversaw Australia's second collapse of the innings depsite Glenn Maxwell(59 off 41)'s best efforts. And once Naib was done, Australia couldn't do much more than aimlessly wander around to a 21 run-loss.
