Afghanistan pulled off a spirited defence and made their way through to the semifinals of the 2024 T20 World Cup after slipping right through Bangladesh in the last Super Eights clash of the ongoing tournament. They will now face South Africa in the Semi-final 1 at Tarouba on Thursday, June 27.

Afghanistan elected to bat first, but the slow nature of the pitch held them back as the Bangladesh bowlers kept striking at the start. Rahmanullah Gurbaz (43 off 55) held one end up, but didn't receive much support from the other end until skipper Rashid Khan (19* off 10) tried to bring some semblance to the total with his blistering cameo.

While Rishad Hossain (3 for 26) did the most damage with the ball for Bangladesh, Mustafizur Rahman (1/17), Shakib al Hasan (0/19), and Taskin Ahmed (1/12) ran a very tight ship to keep Afghanistan to 115/5 in the first innings.

Fazalhaq Farooqi (1/15) and Naveen-ul-Haq (4/26) struck early in the chase to wobble Bangladesh, but Litton Das (54* off 49) stood his ground and kept guiding Bangladesh to a rain-reduced target of 114 in 19 overs. Even as Das was standing his ground, Rashid Khan (4/23) derailed the chase in the middle overs including dismissing Mahmudullah and Rishad off successive deliveries.

Even with all this carnage, Das was still the biggest threat who seemed to take the Bangla Tigers home, until Gulbadin Naib dismissed Tanzim Hasan. Noor Ahmad (0 for 13) also made life difficult at the crease for the opposition batters. As they were inching close to the target, despite multiple rain breaks, Naveen returned to dismiss Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman on successive deliveries to bring Afghanistan home.
