Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja put up a century stand under pressure to hand India the day 1 advantage
Century Stands from two different pairs, Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal for the first wicket, and Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja for the fifth wicket helped India gain advantage on Day 1 of the second Test despite losing four wickets in the second session. India ended the first day at 288/4 with Kohli and Jadeja on the crease.
Speaking about the day, put into bat first, the Indian openers got off to a brisk start as both Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal registered their respective fifties at a good rate, scoring 121 runs in 26 overs in the first session. The second session entirely belonged to the hosts as Holder drew the first blood by setting up Jaiswal for 57. Kemar Roach, soon joined the party as Shubman Gill continued his poor run, nicking one to wicket-keeper for 10 runs.
Three overs later, Jomel Warrican ended skipper Rohit’s long stay with a beauty while Shannon Gabriel cleaned up Ajinkya Rahane for a 36-ball-eight at the stroke of Tea. India managed to score only 61 runs in the second session while they lost four wickets. Rohit Sharma scored 80 runs which included 11 boundaries.
Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja led the rescue in the third session as the duo added a century stand for fifth wicket to take India to a total of 288 with the fall of four wickets. Virat Kohli registered his 30th half-century during the course of the partnership while Ravindra Jadeja played an ideal foil. Both Kohli and Jadeja remained unbeaten on 87 and 36 resectively, helping India take the advantage.
