Cricket teams and the significance of their jersey colors: One of the unsung reasons of the limited overs cricket being a big hit was certainly the inclusion of colored jerseys. It is a very well-known fact that the jersey colors are decided by the Boards governing cricket in a specific country. But these colors do have a special significance for different nations. The meaning of color varies depending on various aspects. We are not certifying the selection of any colors in this post, but this is what the jersey colors of the cricket teams signify. Here are the Cricket teams and the significance of their jersey colors: 10. Zimbabwe, Red – Promising: Zimbabwe. It is the color of passion and the Zimbabweans are certainly never low on that. They have a desire to compete at the topmost level and they have been doing that. They might not have been very successful, but just like the red color, they are vibrant and wish to achieve a lot. Red also is the symbol of surprise; an upset in this case. Zimbabwe has time and again upset the big horses of the games; be it beating Australia in 1983 World Cup at Nottingham by 13 runs or be it former captain Heath Streak’s heroics (5 sixes and 4 fours) in the successful run chase of 274 against New Zealand in the third ODI at Auckland in 2001. The youngsters have always come out all guns blazing to stun the opposition. They defeated the eventual runner-ups of 1999 World Cup, Pakistan, in the group stages then which earned them the Test status. A young Tamim Iqbal ensured the ouster of Indian team from World Cup 2007 and currently the latest sensation Mustafizur Rehman is wreaking havoc. Green is the color formed from the combination of yellow (optimism) and blue (hope) which truly depicts the nature of Bangladeshi players who stunned England in the World Cup 2015 and made it to the quarter-finals for the first time. 8. Green also signifies abundance and the Pakistan team have always had an abundance of talent, especially in the pace department. From Imran Khan to Wasim Akram, and Waqar Younis to Shoaib Akhtar; all have tormented the batsmen with the abundance of pace having taken 1347 wickets among them. It is formed as an emergence from red-brown which is associated towards dedication for the soil. West Indies is not a country but a group of island nations playing for the same soil. They love and respect West Indian cricket the same way like they love their countries. Maroon is also linked with dominance. This was evident as the West Indies once ruled the world of cricket. The West Indies won 1975, 1979 World Cups and also made it to the finals of the 1983 World Cup. The West Indian pace attack boasted of tall pacers like Malcolm Marshall, Ian Bishop, Michael Holding, Courtney Walsh and many more who simply dominated the batsmen. 6. Blue indicates calmness and no wonder why we associate England, the winners of ICC Spirit of Cricket Award (in 2005 and 2006), with calmness. Being thorough gentlemen, the founders of cricket, have always played the game with flair. Blue is also an indicator of confidence and this has always been evident in the player leading the team; the likes of Nasser Hussain, Andrew Strauss, Alastair Cook, they have all had an aura of confidence around them. 5. But in recent times, they have settled with a shade between sapphire blue and the royal blue. Blue always signifies expansiveness and the way Cricket Sri Lanka has expanded its reign is amazing. Sri Lanka was the first non-Test playing nation (they got Test status in 1982) to beating India (in 1979 World Cup by 47 runs). Blue is a perfect color for a country like Sri Lanka because blue is often related with depth and stability. The Sri Lankan playing eleven has always had depth, both in bowling and batting. Sri Lanka, the team that has made to the finals on 5 occasions in last 8 world cups since 2007 (5 T20 World Cups and 3 ODI World Cups) definitely have the stability in their lineup. 4. New Zealand, Black and Blue – Dark Horse: New Zealand. (© Getty Images) In most of the popular polls around the world, the New Zealand jersey has always been chosen as the most attractive one. New Zealand jersey has the blue color which indicates calmness. New Zealand has won the ICC Spirit of Cricket on most occasions: in 2004, 2009, 2010 and 2012. They have always loved the color of black. Black indicates charming personality. Their leader at the 2015 World Cup, Brendon McCullum charmed the audiences with his blitzkrieg performances. Martin Guptill showed his class by registering a double ton in the same tournament and charmed everybody. Moreover, black is always associated with the dark horse. The New Zealand team, in its new-found passion, is certainly the dark horse of modern day cricket. They surprised everyone by being the runner-ups of the World Cup 2015. 3. Something similar happened to the South African national team who returned to international cricket in 1991 after being voted out by ICC in 1970 due to their ruling regime of Apartheid. The rebirth of this nation saw the emergence of one of the powerhouses of cricket today. South Africa, albeit not having won any major ICC event, are the team to beat. They have the tag of being the chokers but even in order to choke, you need good talent to reach that stage. Green means abundance and they have an abundance of talent. Green is related to leadership and their ODI skipper AB de Villiers is the top ranked batsman in the world at the moment. The yellow in their jersey signifies fire. The passion and desire to win are definitely seen in the Proteas. They are often known as the Proteafire. 2. India, Blue – Depth and Intensity: India. Both sky and sea are limitless and so is the love and passion for the game in India. India has a limitless talent and bench strength compared to any other country in the world. India boasts of having the sea of batsmen. Even the second string touring Indian team manages to notch up centuries (as was the case in Zimbabwe in 2015 when Kedar Jadhav scored a ton). Another batsman, Manoj Tiwary was made to sit on the benches for 14 consecutive matches after scoring an unbeaten century. Now that is some serious sea of talent! They indeed bleed blue! 1. The Australians have dominated the game of cricket in all the formats for a fairly long period of time. The current number one ODI team in the world, Australia won 3 consecutive World Cups in 1999, 2003 and 2007. The world that preceded and succeeded the hattrick (1996 and 2011), they ensured to be the finalists and semi-finalists in those tournaments. Yellow also signifies brightness and the aura of Australian players remain unmatched. Greats of the game like Shane Warne, Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist, Glenn McGrath, Brett Lee etc have played in the same era and ensured a bright Australian team.
