Cricketing fraternity prays for Assam Flood victims
Nothing seems to be going right for the state for the time being.
Assam, one of the Seven Sisters of India‘s North-Eastern part, is currently facing a disastrous phase. The deluge floods have taken a severe toll on the northeastern state of the country. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the death toll in the state rose to 27. Even in the state of Bihar, the natural calamity has wreaked havoc thus far with over 46 lakh people affected.
Four deaths were reported from Morigaon, two each from Sonitpur and Udalguri districts and one each from Kamrup (Metro) and Nagaon districts. The flood also took the life of a rhino in the Kaziranga National Park. Even the Brahmaputra and its tributaries are flowing above the danger mark in various places in the state, which isn’t a kind sign by any stretch of the imagination.
Deluge spits venom in Assam
More than 1.50 lakh people have been left homeless and have taken shelter in 427 relief camps and 392 distribution centres, set up by various district administrators, according to the ASDMA. All the 409 inmates of Dhubri district jail were shifted to the Dhubri Girls’ College as floodwaters engulfed the prison as well. Nothing seems to be going right for the state for the time being.
The wild animals, including buffaloes, deer and many others have been forced to move towards the highlands in Karbi Anglong Hills. Vast areas of Manas National Park, Kaziranga and Pobitra Wildlife Sanctuary were submerged under floodwaters. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are working out of their skins to mitigate the damage.
Damage to roads, culverts, bridges and breaching of embankments have been from many places in the state. The Northeast Frontier Railway has slowed down trains in Abhayapuri-Jogighopa section for safety as the villagers have flocked to the railway embankment for shelter.
In the meantime, the cricketing fraternity is concerned for the victims, who have been battered by the wrath of nature. For the people in Assam, it’s a tough time, which doesn’t seem to see an end. As far as the cricketers are concerned, they poured in their wishes.
