CT IPL Flashback: Top 5 hat-tricks over 9 seasons

(Photo Source: BCCI) The Indian Premier League (IPL) since its inception in the year 2008 has produced some of the most riveting cricketing moments. In every season, numerous records are built and broken. Though the game of T20 cricket is believed to be heavily tilted towards the batsmen, yet there have been several bowlers who stepped up and dominated them. Hat-tricks are unique in the game and there have been as many or as few as 14 in the 9-year history of the tournament so far. Out of those, 11 have been taken by Indians and 3 by overseas bowlers. Amit Mishra and Yuvraj Singh did it more than once. Here we take a look at the top 5 hat-tricks in the IPL so far: 5. Makhaya Ntini (CSK vs KKR in 2008) It was the very first season of the league and the former South African fast bowler took the first split hat-trick of the league. Playing for Chennai Super Kings against Kolkata Knight Riders in Kolkata, he inflicted the third overall hat-trick in the history of the league. First, Saurav Ganguly was bowled off the last ball of the 5th over when he charged Ntini and missed the ball, the middle stump was uprooted. Next, it was the first ball of the 17th over when Debabrata Das’s leg stump was dismantled off a fuller delivery. David Hussey was the next victim as his off stump was knocked over by a peach of a delivery. 4. Yuvraj Singh (KXIP vs DC in 2009) The sixer king Yuvraj enforced the most action packed hat-trick you will ever see. In the second season, playing for Kings XI Punjab against Deccan Chargers at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, he picked up his second and the sixth hat-trick overall. It was another split hat-trick followed by Ntini’s earlier. It was first Herschelle Gibbs who cut a shortish ball towards the point and Piyush Chawla took a breathtaking catch, diving full length to his left. It was followed by another piece of brilliance in the field, this time by the keeper Kumar Sangakkara. Andrew Symonds walked down the pitch and the ball missed his outside edge and hit Kumar’s chest and lobbed up. He dived forward, grabbed the ball and took the bails off, all in one motion as Symonds was found short of his crease. The last one turned out to be an error in judgment from Venugopal Rao who left a straight delivery from Yuvraj only to find the ball hitting the middle stump. He had picked up another hat-trick in the same edition against Royal Challengers Bangalore but this one was even more thrilling as compared to the previous one. 3. Sunil Narine (KKR vs KXIP in 2013) The spin magician has always been very difficult for the batsmen to score runs off. In 2013, Kolkata Knight Riders played against Kings XI Punjab in Mohali and Narine picked up his first hat-trick and the 10th overall in the league. David Hussey was the first one to go as he looked to cut a rising off-break and only managed to get a top edge which was smartly grabbed by the keeper Manvinder Bisla. Azhar Mahmood was then foxed by a carrom ball and gave an easy return catch to the bowler. The third one was literally unplayable as Gurkeerat Singh was beaten on the outside part of his bat to be castled. 2. Pravin Tambe (RR vs KKR in 2014) The veteran leg-spinner surprised everyone when he made his IPL debut at the age of 41 in the 2013 edition. In the season that followed, he grabbed his first hat-trick and the 12th overall. Playing for Rajasthan Royals against Kolkata Knight Riders in Kolkata, he struck a superb hat-trick. Manish Pandey was his first prey when he looked to step down the pitch and the bowler threw the ball down the leg side to get him out stumped. Next, it was Yusuf Pathan who attempted to flick a leg-spinner but the leading edge went straight back to the bowler who gracefully accepted the catch. Off the hat-trick ball, he bowled a lovely delivery that drifted in to hit Ryan ten Doeschate on the front pad as he was given out LBW. https://youtu.be/hcr-xXxI7Ig?t=470 1. Amit Mishra (SRH vs PWI in 2013) It was the third occasion when the leg-spinner bagged a hat-trick. Playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad against Pune Warriors India, he bowled a wonderful spell that helped them defend a modest total of 120 runs in Pune. Three wickets were remaining in the Pune innings and 12 runs were needed with 9 balls in hand and Mishra removed all three to give his side the victory. It was the 11th hat-trick in the league overall. It was Bhuvneshwar Kumar first who was trapped in front of the stumps off a flipper from Mishra and the umpire raised his finger. Next to go was Rahul Sharma who played an ugly heave to a flighted one and missed it altogether and the ball sneaked through to hit the stumps.
