Dale Steyn to play in Euro T20 Slam as marquee player
Steyn was earlier ruled out of South Africa's World Cup squad following an injury.
Dale Steyn’s World Cup 2019 dream might have ended up with him flying back to South Africa before participating in any of the matches due to injury, but he has seemingly decided to continue his cricketing career in the T20 format. This time he will feature in the Euro T20 Slam tournament, one of the newest ideas to popularize the game of cricket in Europe.
Euro T20 Slam is a league that will be co-hosted by Cricket Ireland, Cricket Scotland and Koninklijke Nederlandse Cricket Bond, the cricket board of the Netherlands and will see games being played between August and September. The tournament will have two franchises each from the three countries and already some big names have been associated with this league. It is promoted by GS Holding and Woods Entertainment, who hoped more recognized players will come and join in and make it a success.
Dale Steyn joins Euro Slam T20
Steyn has been announced as the newest marquee player by the Euro T20 Slam on their official Twitter account. The 36-year-old, who was named in the South African World Cup 2019 squad, failed to play any match as he couldn’t recover from his shoulder injury in time. The right-arm fast bowler had this injury while playing in IPL 2019 for RCB, where he was called in as replacement bowler.
The vereran in a short video announced that he was joining the Euro Slam as a marquee player and was excited to come and play and was waiting for the tournament to start.
The franchises are- Amsterdam Kings and Rotterdam Rhinos from Holland; Glasgow Giants and Edinburgh Rocks from Scotland and Belfast Titans and Dublin Chiefs from Ireland. Earlier in May 2019, the Brendon McCullum, Shane Watson, Shahid Afridi, and Rashid Khan were named as icon players, while Imran Tahir, JP Duminy, Babar Azam, Chris Lynn, and Luke Ronchi were announced as marquee players.
The six franchises will try to pick these marquee and icon players in the draft. Even Yuvraj Singh, who recently announced his retirement from international cricket and IPL, stated interests from Global Canada T20 and Euro T20 Slam as the reasons behind calling time on his career.
