Darren Lehmann, the former Australia left-handed batsman, had a triple-bypass heart operation in Brisbane. On his 50th birthday on February 5, he suffered from chest pains on the Gold Coast. The unfortunate occurring took place when he was watching his son Jake Lehmann captain the Cricket Australia XI against the England Lions at the Metricion Stadium.

Jake Lehmann will now be captaining the CA XI in a four-day first-class match against the Lions itself in Hobart. Meanwhile, Darren Lehmann is currently recovering at home and said that his return from hospital took place earlier than expected. He was delighted with the work of cardiologist Prince Charles and described him as the ‘Ricky Ponting of cardiac surgery’.

I can’t thank everyone enough: Darren Lehmann

“Just wanted to give all my friends and family an update, and again to say thanks from me and my family for the continued support and messages over the past week,” Lehmann was quoted as saying in a lengthy social media post. “I came home from the hospital yesterday, a little earlier than expected. The operation was triple bypass surgery,” he wrote.

“I can’t thank everyone enough who helped me in big and small ways at the hospital. There simply isn’t enough praise I could give this dedicated team of people at the Prince Charles. A couple of big thank you’s, Peter Tesar (Head of Cardiology), who performed my surgery, best described by his piers (sic) as the Ricky Ponting of cardiac surgery, you are an amazing surgeon, and I loved having chats about both cricket and medicine,” he added.

Lehmann was the recently the head coach of the Brisbane Heat in the 2019-20 edition of the Big Bash League (BBL). The Heat, captained by Chris Lynn. failed to qualify for the playoffs. It was the same franchise he led to victory in the second season of the T20 tournament.

His next assignment is coaching the Northern Superchargers in England’s ‘The Hundred’ competition, scheduled to take place in July. Lehmann was earlier the coach of the Australian national team.

However, he stepped down after the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa. After the incident, the likes of Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft were handed suspensions.
