David Murphy to retire from cricket at end of the season
The England born player represented Scotland in 8 ODIs and 4 T20I matches in his International career in 2013
Former Scotland International and the Northamptonshire player David Murphy has decided to bring an end to his 8-year professional cricket career in order to pursue a career outside of the game. The 28-year-old has announced that the 2017 season in which he is representing his county side Northamptonshire will be the last of his cricketing career.
The England born player represented Scotland in 8 ODIs and 4 T20I matches in his International career in 2013 and also featured for them in two Intercontinental matches. He is a designated wicketkeeper and has affected over 250 dismissals across 9 years of his career as a professional player in 152 matches.
“After some careful consideration, I have decided that the 2017 season will be my last as a professional cricketer. Although I still feel I have something to offer Northants as a player, I have received an extremely attractive proposal to work in law in London beginning in 2018. The past two years have been spent acquiring the necessary qualifications and I believe that the time has come for me to grasp this opportunity to progress both my career and personal life away from the game,” David Murphy was quoted by the Northamptonshire official website.
County record
He has represented Northamptonshire in 63 first-class matches, 29 List A matches and 33 Twenty20s in his career for the county side which began in 2010. The only century of his career was in the first-class game against Surrey while playing for Northampton.
“Northamptonshire has achieved a great deal in the time I have been playing and I feel extremely proud to have played a part in this success. Without a doubt, the 2013 season, in which we won our first T20 trophy as well as gained promotion, shall be remembered most fondly, and, specifically, Finals Day itself is one I will never forget,” said Murphy about his experiences with Northamptonshire.
“I would like to express my gratitude for the support I have received from the fans throughout the years, which has contributed hugely to my performances and the team’s successes. I would also like to thank all the coaches who have shown faith in me throughout my career, especially David Ripley who played a large part in my progression as a wicketkeeper in my younger years. It will be impossible to forget the number of friends I have made in the game and I am grateful to all my teammates for putting up with my quirky habits,” he further added.
