David Warner takes responsibility for SRH's defeat against Delhi Capitals
Sunrisers Hyderabad scored only ten runs for the loss of six wickets after David Warner's dismissal.
Hyderabad: The Sunrisers Hyderabad yet again faltered in a chase with the middle-order failing like ninepins against the Delhi Capitals. In pursuit of a 156-run target, the Sunrisers placed themselves at 100/2 at the end of the 15th over with David Warner still at the crease. However, in the pursuit of boundaries, the SRH players kept missing the line and length of the ball and played it into the hands of the fielders. They registered the worst 8-wicket collapse in the IPL history and were bundled out for just 116.
The opening batsman David Warner tried to stay there in the middle till the end given the recent struggles of the SRH middle-order. He brought up his fifty from 46 balls; his 2nd slowest in the IPL. He added 72 for the opening wicket in 9.5 overs with Jonny Bairstow but couldn’t make most of it in the middle overs. Warner eventually departed scoring 51 attempting to get another boundary with the required rate going over 15 runs.
“I take the responsibility. As the main batsman, you’d try to be there till the end. Unfortunately, I tried to look for a boundary and got out,” said Warner in the post-match press conference.
The Aussie hailed the way the Delhi Capitals bowlers execute their plans. He pointed out the lack of big runs in the middle overs where they failed to find boundaries and couldn’t rotate the despite being a side that’s usually good between the wickets. The Sunrisers were 66 for no loss after nine overs but could only add 18 more runs in the next four overs. They failed to score a boundary in this period and also lost two wickets.
“Credit to the way they bowled. We go off to a good start and again we kept losing wickets. To be honest, if you look at the overs between 7 and 15, we had a fair few dot balls. We shouldn’t be chasing 10 or 12 an over in the backend after the start we got. We didn’t utilize those little periods. We are pretty good at running between the wickets but just failed to get that boundary(s) which is disappointing,” he added.
Hitting the ball well
David Warner also felt that he is hitting the ball as good as ever despite staying away from the game for a while in the last 12 months. On Sunday, Warner became the first player to reach the 400-run mark in the 2019 IPL which he did it in only seven innings. He has scored five fifty-plus scores in those seven innings and has as many as seven fifty-plus scores across the previous ten innings across all formats.
“I feel great. I am seeing the ball well and hitting the ball well. I can’t ask for much more. My job is to go there and score runs. It’s irrelevant that I had 12 months off. I am playing cricket, I am fresh and doing the best I can for the team,” said the Australian opening batsman.
