Dean Jones determines Glenn Maxwell's batting position in ODIs
"We have always known that he has the game,"- Jones
The Australian team took most by surprise when they beat India 2-0 in the recently concluded T20I series. The bowling delivered in the first game while the batting made it up in the second. Glenn Maxwell was the star with the bat in both games. On a sluggish pitch, he scored 56 setting up the platform for the chase (target of 127). In the second game, he scored a superb ton (113 off 55) as Australian hunted down 191 with two balls to spare.
Former Australian cricketer Dean Jones was full praise for the Australian side as he didn’t expect them to beat India. He feels that Australia got quite a lot out of this series. He was all praise for Maxwell as well who was the Man of the Series. However, Jones feels that the Victorian all-rounder needs to show a lot more consistency. He thinks that everyone knows how good Maxwell is, but consistency has been a big problem.
Maxwell batted at No. 7 in the ODI series at home against India and Justin Langer feels that’s the right position for him. Dean Jones though disagrees and wants Maxwell to bat at 5 in the ODIs. “Glenn Maxwell puts bums on seats. His hundred on Wednesday was electrifying but what we need from him is consistency especially with the One-day series about to start.
He hasn’t put two good scores back-to-back since 2015 where he hit 95, 66, 188, 102, and 42 not out. We have always known that he has the game but consistency has been the problem. And he needs to bat at No. 5 in ODIs for Australia,” Jones wrote in his column for the Times of India (TOI).
Dean Jones praises Adam Zampa for his performance in the T20I series
Adam Zampa was the lone spinner in both the T20Is. He performed extremely well in both games. He may not have the wickets to show, but he was excellent in the series. In the first game, he picked up the big wicket of Virat Kohli which started India’s middle-order collapse. In the second game on a belter, he went for just 23 runs in his four overs as the other bowlers were taken for plenty.
Dean Jones feels that was another positive for Australia. Zampa has struggled against India in the past but this was a wonderful performance. “The other great tick for Australia was the wonderful performance by Adam Zampa. This boy has struggled bowling to the Indian batsmen in the past and his none for 23 in the second T20 was a very good bowling display by him,” Jones wrote.
