Deepak Chahar faces the wrath of social media after forcing Virat Kohli to take the DRS
The replays showed that the ball was easily missing the leg-stump much to the agony of the Indian captain.
The Decision Review System and the way teams use it have been the topic of debate in the past few months. Just ask Australia? Ask Tim Paine, who took a fatal review of the bowling of Pat Cummins in the closing stages of the Leeds Test. The replays showed that the ball was going way past the leg-side, meaning that Australia squandered their last remaining review. What happened next everybody knows. Ben Stokes was trapped in front of the wicket off Nathan Lyon and the Aussies were left frustrated and handicapped in the absence of the review.
A similar sort of thing, in a less dramatic encounter though, happened during the 3rd T20I between India and South Africa. India, after having batted first, could only muster 9-134 thanks to some disciplined bowling by the South Africans. And, with the Proteas going hammer and tongs in the first six overs of their run-chase, India needed wickets and in a hurry to make a fist out of that match.
Chahar face the wrath of the fans
In the sixth over of the South African innings, Deepak Chahar bowled a brilliant knuckleball to opener Reeza Hendricks. Hendricks, in an attempt to flick the ball, was beaten, prompting a vociferous appeal from the Indians. Once the ball struck Hendricks pads, Team India went up in unison and following the nod of rejection by the Umpire, the fast bowler went on to literally force captain Virat Kohli into taking the DRS.
The replays showed that the ball was easily missing the leg-stump much to the agony of the Indian captain. And, just like it happened at Leeds, a few overs later, Quinton de Kock was trapped in front of the stumps by Washington Sundar. The Umpire, as was the case in Leeds, nodded in disapproval. With India having wasted their review, couldn’t do anything as they saw the giant screen show three reds.
Chahar forcing Kohli into taking DRS did not go down well with fans
Some fans also remembered MS Dhoni for what they called the ‘Dhoni Review System’ following Rishabh Pant’s inability to gove his inputs to Kohli for the potential review.
South Africa eventually went on to win the game with skipper Quinton de Kock leading the way with an unbeaten 52-ball-79* and Bavuma’s 23-ball-27* as the visitors strolled past the Indian Target in 16.5 overs.
