Deodhar Trophy 2018-19: Ajinkya Rahane celebrates his century moment only to realize there was a scoring error
Rahane and Ishan Kishan slammed tons to help India "C" win the title.
Indian middle-order batsman Ajinkya Rahane is trying to make a statement to the selectors, who are currently not considering him in the limited overs scheme of things. One of the classiest batsmen in the current Indian setup, the Mumbaikar is 38 short of 3,000 runs in ODI cricket.
But unfortunately for the 30-year-old, the selection panel is trying to explore other options and are not considering him as it stands for that number four slot. The only way he can get back into contention is to score runs and he did so quite brilliantly in the Deodhar Trophy final on Saturday.
Captaining the India ‘C’ side, Rahane opened the innings alongside the young gun Ishan Kishan. The duo registered a 210-run partnership and Rahane managed to bat throughout the innings, remaining unbeaten on 144. His effort turned out to be valiant as India ‘C’ emerged victorious, but that wasn’t the biggest talking point of the day.
Suresh Raina halts Rahane’s century celebrations
When Rahane was batting on 96, he punched the ball straight to long-on and picked up a single. Due to some misunderstanding, the scorers on the field displayed on the giant scorecard that Rahane had reached his hundred, while in reality, he was still on 97. As one would expect, the India “C” captain failed to spot the error and raised his bat to the dressing room.
The players back in the green room who had TV telecast available had noticed that there was an error and were quick to correct things. Suresh Raina, a good old friend of Rahane, signaled to him suggesting he’s still three runs short and that partially doused off the elation. This confusion occurred in the 37th over and he finally got to three figures in the 40th over.
Eventually, what matters is that the error didn’t cause any lapse in concentration and things panned out rather smoothly as one can expect from an experienced player like Rahane.
Here’s the video of that mishap which at the end of the day brings a smile on our faces.
