Gujarat Titans continued their dominant run in the IPL 2025 with a comprehensive 39-run victory over Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens, registering their sixth win in eight matches to hold their position at the top of the points table.

Asked to bat first, GT had a slow start followed by calculated acceleration. Skipper Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan, after being set and understanding the conditions, stitched together a 114-run opening partnership. Sudharsan played a knock of 52 off 36 balls, while Gill went on to score 90 off just 55 deliveries, lacing his innings with 10 fours and three sixes.

Jos Buttler's finishing blows of 41* from just 23 balls helped GT push to 198/3 in their allotted 20 overs. Kolkata’s chase never got going as Mohammed Siraj removed Rahmanullah Gurbaz in the first over, and Rashid Khan dismissed the dangerous Sunil Narine during the powerplay. Venkatesh Iyer and Ajinkya Rahane tried to stabilize the innings, but a long boundary drought between overs 5 and 10 pushed the required run-rate over 12.00. Rahane scored a fifty, but his dismissal put the game in GT’s favour, despite KKR having a strong lower-order.

Rashid later removed Andre Russell for the sixth time in T20s. The Afghan spinner finished with two wickets, with Prasidh Krishna also bagging two. GT were clinical in all departments with the bat, ball, and sharp in the field. Meanwhile, KKR slumped to their second consecutive loss and now sit in seventh place, with their playoff aspirations looking far too achieve.

Key Moments from KKR vs GT, Match 39 of IPL 2025

1. Shubman-Sai's solid opening pair shines once again

Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan once again displayed their class at the top order. After a slow start with just 45 runs in the powerplay, the second-lowest without losing a wicket this IPL, the openers quickly changed gears. Sudharsan smashed 52 off 36 balls, regaining the Orange Cap with 417 runs in eight innings, while skipper Gill added 90 off 55 deliveries. This was the pair’s fourth fifty-plus and second century stand of the season. Despite questions over whether GT could’ve pushed past 200, their controlled aggression gave their team a good start.

2. GT bowlers decimate KKR's batting attack

The Gujarat bowlers, despite knowing the fact that dew might come into play in the second innings, kept their line and lengths tight and never let KKR batters get settled for long. Rashid Khan, who was coming off some disappointing outings, made sure to showcase his brilliance. Prasidh Krishna, who has been phenomenal with 14 wickets and holds the Purple Cap, gave his side important breakthroughs. Other bowlers also contributed with one wicket each.

3. KKR's title defense season in trouble

The defending champions came into the tournament as one of the favourites, but the season so far has been far from ideal. With five losses in eight games, KKR are currently in seventh position in the points table. The team in purple and gold hasn't been able to crack the winning formula, which they did successfully in the previous edition brilliantly. With the competition moving to its second phase, the Ajinkya Rahane-led side will have to quickly regroup to return to winning ways.
