26-year old Sri Lankan batsman Dhananjaya de Silva has boarded the flight to the West Indies to join the Sri Lankan side that has been dispatched for their upcoming tour of the Caribbean. The Lankans had initially named a 17-man squad which included de Silva and were due to kick off their tour with a Test match on the 6th of June against the Windies. The 26-year old stayed back following a personal turmoil that did not permit him to travel.

This personal turmoil, as disclosed by Cheif Selector Graeme La Brooy was that Rajan de Silva – Dhanajaya de Silva’s father had been shot dead by an unidentified gunman. This bereavement prevented the youngster from boarding the flight. The shooting is said to have happened on May 24th and de Silva subsequently pulling out of the tour.  However, there was a massive turnaround on his part when he cleared himself and declared himself available for the tour.

Back in the team and on the tour

After having made it big in the initial stages of his career, Dhananjaya de Silva was left out of the side following a few dismal performances. He smashed centuries against India and Bangladesh and thereby cemented his place in a side quite clearly in transition. He made his Test debut against Australia at Pallekele in 2016 and since then he has featured in 13 Test matches scoring 1066 runs at 46.34 with four centuries and two half-centuries.

Cheif selector Graeme La Brooy said that the management would take a call whether or not to play him. “He is flying out on Sunday,” said Chief Selector Graeme La Brooy. “The team management will take a call whether to play him or not in the first Test.

Meanwhile, the Lankan batsmen had a good outing with the bat against the WICB XI. Dinesh Chandimal smashed a century while Niroshan Dickwella and Kusal Perera impressed with half-centuries.
