India had two of their most promising Test batters in the middle on the second day of the 2nd Test in Nagpur. Cheteshwar Pujara and Murali Vijay brought up the tenth 100-plus stand between them, which was also their 4th in a row. The duo stitched a 209-run partnership as India lost just one wicket in the day’s play. Vijay was dismissed for 128 by Rangana Herath.

Pujara consumed 284 balls and will start tomorrow’s play on 121. He will have the support of his skipper Virat Kohli from the other end, who is batting on 54. Opener KL Rahul would be gutted to chop one back to his stumps before stumps on the first day’s play, as he will now play the role of a spectator, with India looking comfortable to post a big total.

Collision turn into laughter

A freakish incident took place in the 44th over of the Indian innings. A well stelled Vijay was seen hitting the ball back to the bowler’s end, and with no field close to that ‘V’ region, he was getting rewarded with a boundary on certain occasions. Sri Lanka skipper Dinesh Chandimal brought on a short mid-on in place soon. Vijay did play a similar stroke but Dilruwan Perera failed to catch it and got into a funny tangle with non-striker Pujara. The fielder had dropped the catch before colliding with Pujara, even though in the first instance it looked like Pujara did come in contact with Dilruwan, as the latter dropped the catch.

Vijay was making a comeback after being out in the cold with a wrist injury. He has put all the talks of a new opening pair to rest, giving the selectors a headache which they won’t mind. “Definitely, any day I will take this,” Vijay said at the conclusion of the second day’s play. “Obviously, we are in a strong position at the end of the day and I wanted to always contribute to the team and I am happy.”
