Dinesh Karthik hit a century today, not with the bat but with the gloves
It's an outstanding achievement by the 31-year old.
Dinesh Karthik took over the likes of Parthiv Patel and Mahendra Singh Dhoni, as he became the first wicketkeeper to effect over a hundred dismissals in the Indian Premier League in all the seasons. He achieved this feat in today’s match against the Kings XI Punjab at Rajkot while playing for the Gujarat Lions.
DK has latched on to 74 catches and stumped the batsmen 26 times in his IPL career. Karthik took a good catch to his right off the bowling of Nathu Singh in the first ball of the second over to dismiss the in-form Manan Vohra and draw the first blood in the match.
Nathu, on his debut, took his first wicket after being in the headlines after the auction this season. Dinesh Karthik followed it up with an unbeaten knock of 58 off 44 balls in a losing cause, with a strike rate of 131.8, smashing 6 boundaries in the process.
The Tamil Nadu batsman has represented 5 different franchise in the IPL – Delhi Daredevils, Mumbai Indian, Kings XI Punjab, Gujarat Lions and Royal Challengers Bangalore. Along with his swift work behind the stumps, he has held a reputable status in the IPL with his batting as well.
The right-hander has amassed over as many as 2732 runs in 145 games at an average if 24 lower down the order. He also has a healthy strike rate of 131. The Indian international has also notched up 13 half-centuries in the process.
Dinesh Karthik is closely followed by Mahendra Singh Dhoni who has effected 94 dismissals in 149 games and Robin Uthappa who has 80 dismissals in 141 matches. Naman Ojha and Parthiv Patel have affected 71 and 66 dismissals respectively.
Interestingly, Australian legend Adam Gilchrist still holds the fifth position of on the list with 67 dismissals behind the stumps. Indian Test wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha, who plays for Kings XI Punjab, stands 7th on the list with 48 dismissals.
