The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) side started off their journey in the 2018 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on a high as they beat the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 4 wickets.

However, their juggernaut had barely gathered steam when they were dealt out two consecutive losses, first at the hands of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), followed by the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) side. Dinesh Karthik recently urged his bowlers to take a leaf out of the book of SRH bowlers.

What SRH pacers like Siddharth Kaul and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have done successfully is to use the knuckle-ball to their advantage by befuddling the opposition batsmen. It was Indian speedster, Zaheer Khan who’s popularised this particular bowling variation while playing for the nation. The Hyderabad side is currently on the top of the points table, having won all three of the matches that they’ve played.

Dinesh Karthik explains his match tactics against SRH

Speaking in the post-match press conference, the KKR skipper was keen on drawing inspiration from the SRH pacers. “Their (SRH) bowlers have a good knuckleball going. They use it to good effect. That’s something we can look at and learn from,” said Karthik. Justifying the usage of spinners in the game against SRH, he said, “In these sort of small games, you need to see what is the best attacking option. You need to keep picking wickets and I thought spinners were a better option.”

Karthik went on to laud the spinners (Kuldeep Yadav, Sunil Narine, Piyush Chawla) of his own side for having shown spirit against the Kane Williamson-led side and said, “I think the spinners bowled beautifully. After the CSK game, the way they have come back, all three bowled well for us. So, I am very happy with the way the spinners bowled. It was coming on to the bat a lot better but for the spinners, it was holding up and the chance of a wicket (was more) so I was trying to utilize that.”
