The Cricket Association of Puducherry is not having the greatest of initial days as a full member of the BCCI. After the board decided to disqualify 8 Puducherry players for flouting the eligibility criteria to participate in the Indian domestic season, The CAP officials defended themselves profusely.

It was earlier confirmed that for any player to represent Puducherry, they should be a part of a college or be employed in the city as of August 31, 2018. With relentless pressure coming from other sides, the cutoff date was drawn back to August 31st, 2017, which saw 8 players getting disqualified ahead of their Vijay Hazare clash against Uttarakhand.

“The CAP didn’t make a mistake here. The BCCI especially gave the cut off date (for the eligibility of players for Puducherry) of August 31, 2018, because CAP was admitted as a member of the Board only in August this year. The CAP thus asked all the eligible players (those who had joined a college, or gained employment in Puducherry since August 31, 2018) to come for the selection trials. All the players, who were eligible as per this special cutoff date of August 31, 2018, were thus picked to play for Puducherry, and this was approved by the BCCI,” said CAP acting secretary V Chandran.

The disqualified players will come back strong next season: CAP

In recent times, the CAP has to face some allegations that they had forged a lot of documents to field some strong players. But V Chandran belittled all the accusations and said that all the documents regarding the players’ eligibility were scrutinized by BCCI and no single mistake was found. In the two games they played thus far in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, they won and lost a game each. The disqualification of some players did dent their strength, but Mr. Chandran confirmed that those players will play for the B team and will be back strong next season.

“The CAP agreed to the decisions taken by BCCI, and is now fielding players eligible as per the cut-off date of August 31, 2017. All the records and documents submitted by CAP were carefully examined and approved by the BCCI. Not a single mistake was found by the board in any of the documents provided by CAP,” defended the CAP official.

“Be assured that there’s no corruption or any wrong-doing in the CAP. It’s a fair and clean set up. It won’t be possible for anyone to prove that the CAP rigged any documents. Please do not believe such wrong propaganda,” stressed Chandran.”All those who are not able to play for us this year will be playing for our B team in practice games this season and will come back strongly next year,” he concluded.
