The importance of domestic cricket is second to none. From the cover drives to inswinging yorkers, from Mumbai to Melbourne, we all have witnessed the prolonged beauty of domestic cricket. Score runs, take wickets and earn your national cap. Back to reality, it is certainly not a walk in the park. There have been cases where tons of runs have been scored, wickets were grabbed in numbers, yet the national call up eluded them. 1. Wasim Jaffer marked his second game with a triple century on a difficult turf and did not look back from thereon. The highest run-getter in the Ranji Trophy tournament has represented India on 31 occasions in Test cricket, notching up 1944 runs with a best of 212 against West Indies in the Caribbean. His international career was cut short due to poor form and injuries, but that did not stop Jaffer from scaling heights at the domestic circuit. He has played a vital part in Mumbai’s Ranji domination over the years. With 19,410 runs at an average of 50.67, along with 57 centuries in First class cricket, Wasim is clearly a legend in his own ways. 2. His batting prowess is second to none while he comes across as a clever medium fast bowler. He has played 190 first-class games, scoring 8137 runs at an average of 33.21 with a highest score of 141. Trego has been a vital cog in the county circuit. His experience has come in handy for many teams. At a time when Marcus Trescothick, Ronnie Irani and the likes of Nick Knight were notching hundreds, Trego was doing heroics at the county circuit. 3. Michael Klinger (Australia): Michael Klinger. (Photo Source: Getty Images) “Maxi” as he is fondly known as, has produced splendid performances in the domestic circuit. He has been named “State Player of the year” for two consecutive seasons, thanks to his blistering knocks at the top of the order. Klinger has earned 155 caps, scoring 9683 runs at an average of 38.88 in first-class cricket. An average of 48.93 in List A career holds him in good books, but time and again he has missed the national cut. With the likes of Hayden, Gilchrist, Martyn and many others holding up their respective spots, the baggy green has eluded him time and again. 4. (Photo Source: PTI) 11,167 runs from 171 matches at an average of 48.13, if numbers are important in cricket then this man is way up in the elite group. When Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli shared the then-record 664-run partnership for their school in a Harris Shield match, he was on the same team and was due to bat next. Amol had a never-ending wait for a chance to play for India, but he made it worth it. Representing Mumbai for the first time, Amol scored an unbeaten 260 in a Ranji pre-quarter-final against Haryana, which is still a record debut score in the Ranji circuit. Even though he carried Mumbai’s hopes on a number of occasions and lifted them to numerous trophy, spectators missed the classy touch of this genius at the international level. 5. He represented the Baggy Green 6 times and made the most of it by amassing 503 runs at an average of 55.88 with a double hundred to his name. For some unfortunate reason, Hodge couldn’t count more caps at the international level. In the domestic level, Hodge’s name will go down in the history books as one of the finest. He has notched up 17,084 runs along with 51 centuries and 64 half-centuries, with a best of 302*. His T20 record is as good as the longer format. He has played 243 T20 games at a staggering average of 37.00, putting up 6661 runs along with a couple of centuries. An important addition to any team, Australia missed the services of Brag Hodge, as much as Brad missed the Australian cap.
