Domestic tournaments to be continued playing with the SG ball
Several key issues were discussed at the captain and coaches conclave that was held in March
Different countries use different balls for their tournaments. The Duke, Kookaburra, and the SG balls are the most prominent ones used in the international games around the world. There is a variation in the way in which the ball manufactured by different manufacturers. Some balls are single stitched while the others are double stitched. It means that different types of balls have different types of seam and the movement and the bounce will be different for each one of them.
The technical committee of the BCCI decided to stick with the SG ball for domestic tournaments. It also decided to consider the opinions and recommendations made at the conclave of coaches and captains. The final draft will soon be prepared for the approval of the general body.
Use of Indian-Manufactured equipment
“We have considered and made recommendations. I would not like to get into the nitty-gritty. But it suffices to say that the effort has been to as far as possible and practicable indigenize the game of cricket in India. With time we have been going forward with using our own cricket products and as far as possible we will continue to do that. But there will be certain exceptions in certain tournaments until the time we are able to persuade and convince the ICC to accept our own manufactured balls, even for international games to be played in India which is not the case in a shorter format,” BCCI acting secretary Amitabh Chaudhary told reporters after the hour-long meeting.
BCCI is inclined towards using Indian made products for all the matches held in India. Most teams were happy with the use of SG balls in Ranji Trophy but expressed their reservations on the use of SG Glace for white-ball tournaments. The Kookaburra Turf balls were introduced in domestic limited-overs tournament two years but the BCCI reverted to the SG ball for the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament 2018 which did not go well with the captains.
The other major issues to be considered were the home-away format for Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy format and the super league format in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The acting secretary also informed that most of the recommendations were considered and the final approval is pending. The conclave was chaired by former India captain Sourav Ganguly, GM (Cricket Operations) Saba Karim and chief national selector M.S.K. Prasad.
