I don't need to speak to the selectors: Gautam Gambhir
"I don't speak to the selectors and I don't need to speak to the selectors. Ultimately, my job is to score runs and that is what I only focus on," Gambhir said.
Veteran Indian batsman Gautam Gambhir has been playing an integral role in Delhi cricket circle for a long time now. Recently, team Delhi trashed Bengal in the semis of the Ranji Trophy 2017-18 to storm into the finals. Gambhir has played a key role in taking the team to the finals of the tournament. If Delhi wins the trophy this season, it would be their first title win in last 10 years.
Needless to say, the achievement has been great thus far and the role of Gautam Gambhir has been immense. As per the quotes in India TV news, Gambhir spoke at length about the season he has had thus far. He has amassed 632 runs with three centuries and two fifties. It is unlikely that he might get a call up to the national side again at the age of 36. However, that does not bother the southpaw. He remarked that his job is to score runs and not think about anything else.
“Keep scoring runs, that is what you can control and you can do. You can’t control things which are not in your hands. The only thing you can control is to get a bat in your hand, go out there, perform and score as many runs as possible. That is what you are meant to do and that is what I am trying to do. This year is no difference from what I used to do last year. The motivation is exactly the same. The day I don’t feel the same I will not hang around,” quoted Gautam Gambhir.
“I don’t speak to the selectors and I don’t need to speak to the selectors. Ultimately, my job is to score runs and that is what I only focus on,” Gambhir said.
On his own form
Speaking about his own form, Gautam Gambhir expressed his satisfaction over the same. He hopes that the team manages to get their together one more time and win the finals as well. He remarked that as a senior player, it becomes very important to perform in the crunch games. He has his eyes set on the big finals.
“We reached the finals so obviously the achievement is great. Hopefully, we can go one step ahead and win it after 10 years which is going to be great. So far it’s been decent. Obviously, when you get 600 plus runs it’s good. The most important is that you have contributed in the games which are very crucial as well, whether it was the quarterfinal or the semi-final. As a senior player, you have to be good in the crunch games and there is still one more game to go,” he quoted.
On Delhi’s performance this season
When asked to comment on Delhi’s form and success this season, Gautam Gambhir praised the way the team combinations have clicked thus far. He, however, refrained from picking up any names to cite the reasons for the team’s success. He also stressed on the fact that the team has to follow up this season with another good show in the next season. Once they master consistency, only they they can be in the same league as Mumbai or Karnataka.
“There is still a long way to go. Consistency is all that matters. Look at someone like Karnataka, look at some like Mumbai they have won so many times consistently. They are the most consistent teams going around,” mentioned Gautam Gambhir.
“Let’s see how we do next year because the follow-up year is very important and that is what will show where you stand. Any team can have one good one season but ultimately it is the consistency that really matters,” he added further.
