Don’t see a reason why Eoin Morgan should stop playing, he has lots of cricket left in him: Jos Buttler

England white-ball vice-captian Jos Buttler has backed skipper Eoin Morgan stating that he doesn’t see any reason why he should retire. Morgan’s form with the bat has been questioned a bit in the last few months and even suggestions of him retiring have seen the light of the day. 

England’s recent crashing out from the T20 World Cup 2021 further increased talks of him stepping down. This year, he has found it tough to get a big score, whether it was for England, or London Spirits in the Hundred or Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League. 

But, Buttler argued that there is a lot of cricket left in the skipper. “From my point of view, I don’t see any reason why Eoin Morgan should stop playing. He has been such a brilliant captain for us. He’s a fantastic player, and still contributing so much to the team as a leader and as a batsman. So, if he is feeling fit and he’s got the hunger to do it, I don’t see any reason why he should stop next year or the year after. I see Eoin having lots more years of cricket left in him,” wrote Buttler in his column for The Daily Telegraph on Tuesday.

Morgan himself has intended that he would like to continue till the T20 World Cup next year, which will begin in about 11 months’ time in Australia. The English team had a great dream to hold the 50 overs World Cup along with the T20 World Cup and succeed in becoming the first nation to do so in men’s cricket. However, their brilliant run ended with a heartbreaking loss to New Zealand. 

Buttler further stated that Morgan motivated the team after the loss. “Eoin Morgan was encouraging us to use that as motivation to try to get better as individuals and as a team. We’re a really honest and hardworking team, with a big scope for improvement as a group. That’s always a good place to be.”

England will now face Australia in the Ashes series Down Under. Buttler has reached Brisbane where he will be a part of the squad which plays for the coveted trophy. The series is set to begin on December 8. As far as white-ball cricket is concerned, England’s next assignment will be in the West Indies in the early part of 2022.
