The Indian team is yet to kick off their England tour and have already suffered multiple blows. After pacer Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out of the T20I series and possibly the ODIs as well, as it turns out young spinner, Washington Sundar will not be a part of the T20I series either.

Washington was a part of the team for the two-match T20I tour of Ireland and hurt himself during a training session ahead of the opening encounter in Dublin. He couldn’t walk properly and was seen limping off the ground with the team physio and training giving him support. He was playing football with the rest of the team during an optional training session. It is understood that the spinner landed awkwardly and hurt his ankle. Following scans, it was revealed that he will need a few weeks to recover and thus will not take any further part on the tour.

The Indian team management would’ve also wanted to give Sundar a game in Ireland as all the other players but he got a chance in the two matches. He will not only feel that he missed out but the injury has now ruled out any possibility of him playing his first game in England.

The 18-year-old off-spinner made his T20I debut in December last year against Sri Lanka at Mumbai and his ODI debut against the same team at Mohali. In the absence of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, the selectors picked Sundar for the T20I as well as ODI series for the limited-overs leg of the UK tour.

BCCI to announce replacements

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to officially confirm the extent of the injury and the time he will send out. The national selectors will now have to name a replacement for both Bumrah and Sundar. It is believed that pacer Deepak Chahar who has had an impressive tour of England with the India A team might be roped in as Bumrah’s replacement while they might want to consider Ashwin in place of Sundar.

The Indian team will play a three T20Is and as many One-Day Internationals to start their tour of England starting July 3 before they turn up in whites for the five-match Test series.
