England skipper Joe Root fired for his team at a crucial juncture in the first Test against India at Trent Bridge. Root returning to form is huge for the home side as none of their other batters in the top six have delivered consistently in the last 12-18 months. Meanwhile, his counterpart Virat Kohli bagged a golden duck in the first innings and didn’t get to bat later in the game due to rain.

Kohli hasn’t been amongst the runs over the last few months, especially in Test cricket. Not that he is struggling, but the India skipper isn’t converting the starts. The last time he toured England, Kohli amassed a massive 592 runs in five Tests and will be keen on scoring big for India in the rest of the series. And this is what former Pakistan cricketer Salman Butt is hoping.

He reckons the ongoing Test series will be fun to watch if Root and Kohli both start firing for their teams. According to Butt, Test cricket will be pleasing to watch in that case over the next month or so.

“It will be very much fun when both of them (Root and Kohli) start scoring. If that happens, it will add the value to Test matches as both are two of the best batsmen in world cricket. And if they don’t perform for a long time, then we might not enjoy watching the game,” he said in a video posted on his Youtube channel.

Butt feels England needs Root to perform everytime

There are no prizes for guessing that England has been over-reliant on Joe Root for quite some time now. Whenever the skipper hasn’t performed, the team has struggled to post a good total on the board. As far as the second Test at Lord’s is concerned, Salman Butt feels the hosts will need for their captain to stand up again.

” I hope good competitive cricket will take place at Lord’s and for England it is necessary for Root to perform,” the former Pakistan captain further added.
