England v New Zealand World T20: England Player Ratings

England put on a clinical all-round show to beat the New Zealand comprehensively by 7 wickets to book a place in the final for the second time in the tournament’s history. It was a rather easy day in the field for the Englishmen at the Feroz Shah Kotla ground, Delhi. After electing to bowl first, England did a good job with the ball and restricted the Kiwis to a decent 153/8 after 20 overs. Later, Jason Roy gave a thunderous start to the chase and did most of the chase work by himself before losing his wicket just after the midway stage of the second innings. Jos Buttler and Joe Root then took care of the remaining job and completed the chase without any hassle.

England will now meet either India or West Indies depending on who wins the 2nd semi-final at Mumbai.

Jason Roy – 9.5/10:

Jason Roy was England’s hero today. The explosive right-hander played an outstanding innings of 78 runs off just 48 balls to help his team chase down the target pretty easily. Roy opened the innings with Alex Hales and batted aggressively. His flawless hitting ensured that England were never in a state of worry during the chase. He lost his wicket in the 13th over after he was clean bowled by leg-spinner Ish Sodhi.

Alex Hales – 6/10:

Alex Hales was the passive partner during the 82 runs opening wicket stand with Jason Roy. The right-hander looked satisfied with nudging singles and giving the strike to his aggressive partner, enjoying the spectacle from the non-strikers end. Hales, however, could continue for long with his conservative approach and was the 1st English wicket to fall after he caught by Munro at long on off left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner.

Joe Root – 8/10:

The fall of hales brought Joe Root in the middle who continued his delightful batting form and struck an unbeaten 27 off 22 balls. He played supporting roles to Jason Roy and later Jos Buttler to ensure that his team goes past the winning line. He didn’t try to be aggressive but also did not let any opportunity to punish the bad balls.

Eoin Morgan (C) – 2.5/10:

Eoin Morgan was a surprise failure today. The left-hander came in after Jason Roy’s blitz was brought to an end. The southpaw, known as a finisher in the team, failed to survive a single ball today as he was dismissed for a golden duck by Ish Sodhi. However, he did his primary role of leading the side brilliantly.

Ben Stokes – 9/10:

The talented all-rounder did a wonderful job with the ball today during the death overs, picking up the crucial wickets Corey Anderson and Luke Ronchi along with the tail-ender Mitchell Santner to finish with figures of 3/26 against his name. Stokes was brought into the attack in the 7th over but was quite expensive. However, he came back brilliantly during the death overs to help England curb the Black Caps from reaching a formidable target.

Jos Buttler (wk) – 8.5/10:

Jos Buttler performed the role of a finisher for the Brits today. The aggressive wicketkeeper-batsman went after the New Zealander immediately after coming in to bat. There was not much work left for him to do as England had the match in their control with the team requiring 44 from 46 ball. But the back to back wickets by Ish Sodhi brought some life into the match. However, Buttler soon took control and finished the remaining job with ease, He made 32 runs off just 17 balls laced with 3 sixes and 2 fours.

Moeen Ali – 8/10:

Moeen Ali did a great world with the ball today. The off-spinner was introduced mid-way through the innings and made an immediate impact by snapping up the important wicket of Kane Williamson. He was used for a two-over spell by his skipper but did not disappoint at all, ending up with a tally of 1/10.He did not get a chance to bat today.

Chris Jordan – 8/10:

Chris Jordan also had a productive day with the ball. The right arm seamer bowled tightly and was economical right the beginning. He took the wicket of Ross Taylor in the 17th over. In fact, his miserly bowling at the end of the first innings was a big reason why New Zealand failed to put up a big total on the scoreboard. Jordan eventually ended with 1/24 to his name.

Adil Rashid – 2.5/10:

Adil Rashid was below par and gave his worst performance of the tournament today. The leg-spinner was easily negotiated by the opposition. He gave away 33 runs off his 4 overs without any success. The leggie showed a lot of promise at the start of the mega event where he weathered the high scoring opening game against West Indies and finished with a very economical 1/20 However since that show his performances been inconsistent.

David Willey – 6.5/10:

David Willey has been an excellent new ball bowler for the England in the World T20. The 26-year-old took the wicket of the dangerous Martin Guptill in his first over to provide England with the first breakthrough. This was the fourth time out of five so far that the left arm swing bowler has done so. Willey was used for only a short two over spell at the start of the 1st innings. But, he did a satisfying job, finishing with 1/17.

Liam Plunkett – 4/10:

Liam Plunkett was up his standards today. The 30-year-old came in as the first change bowler had a tough time against the Kiwis duo of Kane Williamson and Colin Munro who went after him completely. But, Plunkett made a good comeback in his second spell, picking up the wicket of Munro in the 14th overs. But, unfortunately, he kept leaking runs much to the dissatisfaction of the English fans. Plunkett eventually ended with figures of 1/38.
