A Test win in Birmingham continues to remains a dream for India as they failed to chase the 84 runs they needed to win in the first session of the 4th day having lost the remaining five wickets for only 52 runs. Dinesh Karthik got out in the first over of the day but Hardik Pandya survived with the skipper Virat Kohli who scored a fifty. Ben Stokes picked the big wicket of Kohli when India were 53 runs away from a win. Pandya tried hard but couldn’t make it as he was dismissed as the last man for 31 runs and the team lost the match by the same margin.

0 – Number of Test matches Asian team have won at Edgbaston in Birmingham out of the 17 Tests played at the venue. India have lost six out of the seven Test matches they played at this venue.


5Virat Kohli now has five centuries as captain in a losing cause in Test cricket which is the most for any player. Brian Lara also has five such centuries to his name in Test cricket.


7 – Kohli has scored a century and fifty-plus score on seven occasions in Test cricket; the joint most times by an Indian along with Sachin Tendulkar.


11 – He now has scored over 200 runs in a Test match on 11 different occasions. These are the most number of times an Indian aggregated 200+ runs in a Test. Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar scored 200+ runs in ten different Test matches.


31 – India’s 31-run defeat in this game is their 4th narrowest loss in Test cricket in terms of runs. They lost the 1999 Test match in Chennai and 1987 Test in Bangalore by 12 runs and 16 runs respectively against Pakistan. They lost the 1977 Test match against Australia in Brisbane also by 16 runs.


194 – The total of 194 is the 3rd lowest target India failed to chase in the 4th innings of a Test match. They lost to Windies while chasing 120 in the Bridgetown Test in 1997 and 174 against Sri Lanka at Galle in 2015.


200 – Virat Kohli’s 200 runs are the 2nd most by an Indian captain in a Test match in England. MAK Pataudi aggregated 212 runs (64 and 148) in the Leeds Test match in 1967.


1998 – The last instance when England successfully defended a target of 200 and lower in the 4th innings of a Test was back in 1998. They defeated Australia by a 12-run margin in the Boxing Day Test in 1998 by bowling out the hosts for 162.
