England vs India 5th Test, Day 3 Stats Review: Jonny Bairstow’s feat, Shubman Gill’s lean run, and other stats
With a lead of 257 runs and plenty of batting left, team India would look to set a target of above 400 for the hosts on the fourth day.
Jonny Bairstow’s stellar run in the Tests continued as the devastating batter smashed his fifth Test century this year to help England post 284 runs in their first innings. With this hundred, Bairstow became the 15th England player to slam centuries in three successive Tests. His scores in the last four innings now read as 106, 71*, 162, and 136. Mohammed Shami finally got rid of the dangerous batter as the hosts got bundled out for below 300.
Speaking of how day three of the final Test unfolded, continuing on his overnight score of 12 not out, Bairstow struck 106 off 140 with the help of 14 fours and two maximums. Skipper Ben Stokes made 25 while wicketkeeper batter Sam Billings got dismissed for 36. Mohammed Siraj was the pick of the Indian bowlers for his spell of 4/66. Captain Jasprit Bumrah and Shami took three and two wickets respectively.
With a healthy lead of 132, the visitors started their second innings with Shubman Gill getting out yet again, the second time in the match, to pacer James Anderson for just four runs. Gill has now managed to score just 320 runs in 15 innings with two half-centuries after the famous Gabba Test victory in the Border-Gavaskar series 2020/2021. Stuart Broad got the better of Hanuma Vihari for 11 while Virat Kohli yet again failed to register a big score as he went back to the pavilion for 20 off the bowling of Stokes.
The England captain got Kohli’s wicket for the sixth time in Test cricket. Cheteshwar Pujara handled the innings perfectly as he brought up his 33rd half-century to remain unbeaten on 50 off 139. Centurion from the first innings, Rishabh Pant gave him good support till the end as he made 30 not out off 46. India ended the day in a dominant position with a solid lead of 257 runs under their belt.
