An unlucky fracture to his right thumb during the Ireland T20Is resulted in Bumrah’s unavailability for the ODI series and then the first two Tests. While his Yorkers at the death were missed in the ODI series, what Bumrah could do to the fortunes of the team were displayed in the third Test, which India won by 203 runs. Bumrah’s fifer in the second innings was the prime factor behind India eventually dismissing England after Stokes and Buttler had frustrated the Indians with their dogged fight.

Even in the first innings, the Ahmedabad-born speedster didn’t flatter to deceive and picked up a couple of vital wickets to halt England’s surge. He dismissed South African-born left-handed batsman Keaton Jennings to pick up his maiden wicket on English soil. Thereafter, he nipped out Buttler’s wicket when the right-hander scored 39 quick-fire runs off 32 balls with the help of three fours and a couple of sixes.
