Jonny Bairstow dismantled the New Zealand bowling line-up as he smashed the second-fastest century for England in Tests to script a memorable victory for his side in the second match at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. Chasing a target of 299, Bairstow hammered 136 off just 92 with 14 fours and seven maximums as he treated the game as an ODI to also record the highest successful run-chase at the venue. Skipper Ben Stokes joined the party to remain unbeaten on 75 off 70 as the hosts sealed the series 2-0 with one match to go.
Speaking about how the encounter went by, Stokes had won the toss and opted to field first. Daryl Mitchell continued his solid form from the last game as he slammed 190 runs, his highest score in Tests, along with Tom Blundell who amassed 106 as New Zealand registered their highest total of 553 against England in England. The duo also achieved the highest fifth-wicket partnership of 236 runs for the Kiwis in the format. In reply, Ollie Pope got to his best score of 145 with Joe Root continuing his spectacular form in the Whites. He mustered 176 as the English side posted 539, 14 short of New Zealand’s total. In the second innings, Will Young, Devon Conway, and Daryl Mitchell all smashed half-centuries each as the tourists managed to reach a total of 284 with a lead of 298 runs. The veteran James Anderson reached yet another milestone of 650 Test wickets as he became the first pacer to achieve the feat. His bowling partner Stuart Broad completed 350 scalps on home soil. Kiwi pacers were all over the England side as the hosts found themselves in trouble at 93/4. Bairstow then began the carnage, especially after the tea break as he tore apart the Blackcaps bowling unit. With 160 runs needed in the final session, Bairstow and Stokes reached the target in just 16 overs after the break. The visitors just got blown away by Bairstow’s brutal assault to lose the series with one match to go. For his breathtaking ton, Jonny won the Player of the Match award.
