England vs Pakistan, 2020: 3rd Test, Day 2 – Crawley’s record knock, Buttler’s career best and more stats

Zak Crawley and Jos Buttler put England in a commanding position following a record-breaking partnership of 359 for the 4th wicket. Resuming the 2nd day on 332/4, the home team England finished with 583/8 as Crawley smashed 267 from 393 balls while Buttler scored 152 off 311 deliveries. Pakistan was left to play the final hour before the stumps where a charged up James Anderson broke the visiting team’s top-order. Anderson’s spell read 5.5-1-13-3 as Pakistan ended at 24/3 losing both their openers and Babar Azam.

A record knock from Crawley:

267 – Zak Crawley’s 267 is the 2nd highest maiden century in Test cricket for England. Tip Foster’s maiden Test ton ended at the score of 287 which came during the 1903 SCG Test against Australia. Crawley’s innings is also the 7th highest maiden century in the longer format.

267 – Crawley’s 267-run knock is now the highest individual score in Test cricket to end via stumping. The previous highest was 258 by Seymour Nurse against New Zealand in the 1969 Christchurch Test.

2 – The 267-run knock by Crawley is the 2nd highest individual Test score for England while batting at No.3 position. Wally Hammond’s unbeaten 336 against New Zealand in the 1933 Auckland Test is the only Test score which is higher than Crawley’s 267 for England at No.3 position.

A big knock at a young age:

22y 201d – At the age of 22 years and 201 days, Zak Crawley became England’s youngest No.3 batsman to score a double century in Test cricket. Overall, Crawley is the 3rd youngest player to score a Test match double ton for England.

Only Len Hutton (22y 60d; 364 vs AUS in 1938) and David Gower (22y 103d; 200* vs IND in 1979) were younger than Crawley by the time of their maiden Test double for England.

5 – Zak Crawley is only the 5th player in Test history to record a 250+ score before turning 23. Sir Gary Sobers, Sir Don Bradman (2), Len Hutton and Graeme Smith (2) are the other four players with 250+ runs in a Test inning before turning 23.

22y 201d – Crawley also became the 2nd youngest player to score a Test double hundred against Pakistan. Sir Gary Sobers was 21 years and 216 days old when he scored an unbeaten 365 against the Pakistan team during the 1958 Kingston Test.

Buttler’s career-best:

3 – Jos Buttler became only the 3rd wicketkeeper with a 150+ score for England in Men’s Test cricket. Alec Stewart and Jonny Bairstow had two Test scores of 150+ while playing as a wicketkeeper.

5 – Jos Buttler is only the 5th cricketer with 150+ scores as a wicketkeeper in both Test and ODI formats. Adam Gilchrist, Kumar Sangakkara, MS Dhoni and Denesh Ramdin are the other players with this feat.

A record partnership:

359 – The 359-run partnership between Zak Crawley and Jos Buttler is England’s first triple century stand for the 5th wicket in Test cricket. Their previous highest was 254 by Keith Fletcher and Tony Greig pair in the 1973 Mumbai Test against India. The 359-run stand between Crawley and Buttler is also the joint 4th highest by any pair for the 5th wicket in this format.

359 – The 359-run stand by Crawley-Buttler pair is also England’s 2nd highest for a 5th or lower wicket in Test cricket. The highest came between Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow who added 399 runs for the 6th wicket during the 2016 Centurion Test.

Anderson @ 100:

100 – James Anderson completed 100 wickets in International cricket against Pakistan by dismissing Babar Azam. He is the 2nd England player to bag 100 International wickets against Pakistan after Stuart Broad who achieved the milestone in the previous match.
