England’s lowest T20 international totals
Twenty20 cricket was originally introduced at the professional level by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in 2003 for the inter-county competition in England and Wales. It has since then gone on to become a widely followed format of the game. England’s national T20 side won the ICC Word T20 in 2010 in the Caribbean and their long wait of a global trophy. The team has won many incredible matches however also registered some disappointing low scores.
England’s lowest T20I score was registered against India in a 2012 World T20 match in Colombo. Chasing a target of 170, the English batting fell well short and was bundled out for 80. England twice got bowled out for a score of 88, once against Netherlands in the 2014 World T20 and the other time against West Indies at the Oval in 2011. Both these matches were one-sided losses for the English.
Two more same team totals of 111 resulted in two more big defeats for England. In the 2009 World T20 at home, the team was outclassed by South Africa by 7 wickets in a run-chase in Nottingham. Old foes Australia out-batted England by hammering 195/6 in the first inning in Sydney in 2014 and in reply the visitors lasted only 17.2 overs.
In 2012, in Chester-le-Street against the Proteas, England scored 118/7 and lost the match by 7 wickets. The next lowest total for the team was against Ireland in Guyana in the 2010 World T20. Batting first England scored 120/8 and in reply Ireland was 14/1 in 3.3 overs before rain resulted in a washout. In the 2009 World T20 at home England was bowled out for 121 in 19.1 overs against West Indies and lost the match by 6 wickets.
England finally managed to defend a low score in 2012 in Abu Dhabi against Pakistan. In the decider of the 3-match series, England scored 129/6 and won the thrilling contest by 5 runs. Against Australia in 2014 at the MCG, England scored 130/9 however it didn’t prove enough as the home side completed the run-chase in 14.5 overs for the loss of just 2 wickets.
